Nursery at New Brighton Primary School

Beach School starts in nursery here. Learning on the shore gives New Brighton Primary School’s youngest children a connection with their coastal surroundings, alongside play in classrooms and outdoor spaces. It is a distinctive part of the provision’s character.
The nursery sits within the school’s Foundation Stage, with its Foundation 1 class named Nutmeg. The school takes children from age three and is based on Vaughan Road in Wallasey. In the Ofsted inspection of 17 and 18 October 2023, early years provision received a Good judgement within the school’s inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Play is the starting point for learning. The nursery curriculum encourages children to investigate, make things and develop ideas, using indoor classrooms and outdoor space. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together with children’s health and safety: the emphasis is on building foundations for what comes next.
Bright Ideas adds a local dimension. Its Foundation 1 learning overview sits alongside the EYFS plans, and activities draw on the surrounding area to help children understand the world close to home. Beach School makes that connection concrete. Nursery classes take part in shore sessions led by an enrichment coordinator with a Level 3 Beach School qualification; sessions are adapted to each class’s learning objectives. Across the programme, examples include making portraits from natural materials and investigating rocks. These are programme examples rather than a fixed nursery timetable.
October 2023 early years findings give a clearer picture of learning: children developed spoken communication, started connecting letters with sounds and became familiar with routines quickly. Learning was sequenced so that children could add to existing knowledge. For parents, that gives substance to the play-based approach: language development and predictable routines sit alongside exploration.
Nutmeg has a teacher and a teaching assistant listed in the Foundation 1 team. Beyond the classroom, the school’s pastoral structure includes a family support worker, a learning mentor and a safeguarding and pastoral lead. EYFS activities include additional interventions where children need them, so support forms part of the learning plan.
ClassDojo gives families a direct communication route. Class Story carries weekly learning updates, while messaging connects parents with their child’s teacher. That makes it easier to follow classroom learning and raise questions.
School lunchtime menu downloads include allergen information, with three menu weeks introduced in October 2023. These provide a starting point for considering dietary needs, rather than establishing a nursery meal package.
Curriculum adaptation. School-wide improvement actions in October 2023 concerned staff understanding of curriculum content and adapting teaching for pupils with SEND. Families should keep those wider priorities in mind alongside the early years findings.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Wirral Council manages the school’s admissions, so that is the route for the next application. Choosing the nursery and obtaining a school place are separate decisions.
Three session patterns have different collection times. Full-time nursery runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm; morning sessions finish at 11:45am after an 8:45am start. Afternoon sessions begin at 12:45pm and end at 3:45pm. The afternoon collection is therefore later than the full-time nursery finish, a useful distinction when arranging childcare.
Use the Nursery Admissions enquiry form to contact the school or arrange a tour. It includes space for medical conditions, allergies and SEND information, allowing families to introduce their child’s needs when enquiring. The office can also be reached on 0151 639 3869 or at schooloffice@newbrighton.wirral.sch.uk.
