Outdoor movement, first steps in phonics and joining school celebrations give Willow Class its character. This is the nursery at Benson Church of England Primary School, taking children from age 3 and participating in the wider school's events. A nursery place brings a child into school life early, with its own session pattern and learning space.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 15 and 16 July 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Willow's outdoor space gives children room to develop their movement. Physical learning has a clear place alongside the beginnings of reading: phonics starts in Nursery. For parents, these are two concrete parts of the early years foundation stage (EYFS) here, bringing movement and early literacy into the nursery experience.
In July 2025, phonics teaching was consistent and precise. Reading therefore begins before the move to Reception, rather than waiting for that next stage. The emphasis on early learning also extends to independence and resilience, giving children something to practise beyond recognising sounds.
The named 5 to thrive approach connects behaviour with learning. Children practise respectful behaviour and kindness, persevere, use good manners and learn through mistakes. In early years, these habits support friendships and readiness to learn. The point is practical: learning to keep trying and getting along with other children are part of the educational work here.
Practitioners support the nursery's teaching lead. For children needing additional help, the school's SEND approach starts with their needs: a formal diagnosis is not a prerequisite for support. Help can involve adapted classroom resources, targeted interventions or extra adult assistance. Parents are involved when SEND is identified, and concerns go first to the class teacher, who can seek the SENCo's advice.
Communication gives families regular points of contact. Across the school, there is a weekly email newsletter, two parents' evenings each year and an annual report. Changes to who will collect a child should go through the office, keeping collection information with the team handling general enquiries.
Cool Milk supplies daily milk for children who want it, with free milk for under-5s and registration required. Children can access water during the day; water is also the only drink they may bring to school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Oxfordshire County Council, even when their child already attends the nursery. Treat that application as a distinct step, rather than assuming the nursery booking carries forward.
Participation in school events and celebrations gives Willow children experience of the wider school. That connection is part of their nursery life; it does not secure admission to Reception.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Lunch Club occupies the interval, from 11.45am to 12.15pm. This makes the midday booking a separate part of the session pattern to consider.
The universal 15 funded hours begin from the term after a child's third birthday; 30 hours are available for those who qualify. Sessions and Lunch Club may use funded hours when the child's entitlement is sufficient; otherwise charges apply. Ask the school for current charges.
For enquiries, contact the office on 01491 202502 or office.3181@benson.oxon.sch.uk. A nursery information session on 12 November 2026 runs from 9.30am to 10.00am, with no booking needed.
