Learning to work alongside other children is a clear thread in Bonneygrove’s early years provision. In June 2022, children were courteous and cooperated well, giving parents a concrete picture of the social side of learning here. Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 15 and 16 June 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The school’s own nursery takes children aged three and over. In June 2022, it provided places on both a full-time and part-time basis. Bonneygrove is on Dark Lane in Cheshunt, so this is nursery provision within a primary school setting.
Cooperation is the clearest nursery-relevant detail: children in early years worked together successfully in June 2022. Learning alongside peers therefore forms part of the picture, alongside the early years provision’s Good judgement.
Across Bonneygrove and Millbrook, the federation describes a therapeutic approach to behaviour. Adults seek to understand the feelings behind a child’s actions and teach children to regulate themselves, consider others and repair relationships. The emphasis is on learning how to respond, giving families a useful sense of the approach used across the school.
The wider school environment includes woodland areas and substantial green outdoor space. These are physical features of the federation’s schools, rather than evidence of a particular nursery timetable or activity programme.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) follows a school-wide process involving families. Children on the SEND register have individual Learning Plans recording their interests, strengths and adjustments. Plans are reconsidered each term, giving parents regular opportunities to discuss progress and next steps.
Depending on need, support can involve individual work or small groups with teachers and support staff. Speech and Language Therapists and Educational Psychologists are among the specialists the federation works with; parents are consulted before a referral. Families can also request an extra meeting with the SENCo or class teacher.
Medical care has a separate planning process. Individual Healthcare Plans are developed with parents and health professionals where appropriate, and reviewed annually or when needs change. Written parental permission is required before staff administer medication. This makes sharing a child’s care requirements an important part of preparing to start.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hertfordshire County Council. Applications usually begin in early November and close on 15 January each year; parents may rank up to four schools.
For children with SEND, starting-school support includes meetings, visits and extra transition sessions. These help prepare for a change of setting; they are separate from the allocation of a Reception place.
