At a Glance

Explorers is the name given to the youngest learners here, and experimentation runs through the nursery curriculum: children handle materials, try out ideas and make things through play. Goffs Oak has a nursery class with 30 places, described by the school as full-time, within its community primary school on Millcrest Road in Goffs Oak.

Early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection of 15 and 16 November 2022. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Learning Means the World gives nursery learning a theme-based structure. Its Explorers phase includes the nursery, with communication, culture, conservation and conflict forming the programme's four organising ideas. The school aims to encourage curiosity and cooperation, giving children opportunities to consider other people alongside their own ideas.

Art brings that approach into practical activity. Within early years, children experiment with different materials and use their imagination during Child Initiated Learning. Design and technology sits within Expressive Arts and Design: children create things through both play they choose themselves and activities directed by adults. Those two routes give room for personal ideas as well as adult guidance. Children's artwork is displayed in classrooms and elsewhere around the school, making their creations part of the physical learning environment.

Shared projects also involve the nursery. For a Harvest Festival Gratitude Tree, children contributed a leaf or apple expressing their thoughts about gratitude. Nursery children have also taken part in Christmas bauble workshops led by the Well-being Ambassadors, followed by carol singing. These are examples of creative activity with a social purpose, connecting making things with expressing feelings and spending time together.

In November 2022, adults established expectations and routines from the beginning of early years. There was also a school-wide curriculum weakness: some subjects needed clearer decisions about essential knowledge and vocabulary so that learning could build more effectively. This was a wider improvement requirement, rather than a finding confined to nursery.

Care and Support

Families have access to a special educational needs coordinator and a Mental Health and Pastoral Lead through the school telephone number. These provide routes for discussing learning needs and emotional support.

Lunches are prepared at school, with vegetarian choices and special diets on request; children can bring packed lunches instead. Paid supervisors oversee lunchtime. This gives families a choice of meal arrangements alongside a route for discussing dietary requirements.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Hertfordshire County Council's normal admissions process and meet its normal deadline. Nursery enquiries go to the school office, while the council controls Reception admission. Keep those two applications separate in your planning.

Practical Information

For nursery enquiries, telephone 01707 888488 or email admin@goffsoak.herts.sch.uk. Nursery classroom tours have been offered by booking through the office, with parents asked, wherever possible, to arrange childcare for the visit.

Uniform includes a brown sweatshirt or cardigan and a polo shirt in white or gold; embroidered logos are optional on these items. Clothing should be labelled. Pre-loved uniform is held at school, giving families another way to obtain it.
