At a Glance

African snails, playground chickens and shopping for cake ingredients gave Greenfield’s nursery day a distinctive character at the October 2024 inspection. Learning connects conversation with things children can handle, observe and do. Greenfield Nursery School provides maintained nursery education for children aged 2–4 in Waltham Cross and forms a federation with Hurst Drive Primary School.

Early language is a stated priority: the nursery aims to develop vocabulary and children’s confidence in expressing their ideas. That focus matters for a child beginning to talk beyond the family circle, as well as one learning to explain increasingly complicated thoughts.

The Nursery Day

In October 2024, learning was adapted to children’s interests, with staff using assessments to decide what each child needed next. Activities included painting, water play, building and exploring African snails. Children knew how to find resources and understood practical routines such as wearing an apron for painting. This gave them scope to choose activities and manage small tasks themselves.

Animal care brought another dimension to the playground: children observed chickens roaming there and learned to care for a rabbit. Trips to local shops to purchase cake ingredients connected learning with baking. A cultural day introduced food from different countries, giving children direct experience of food from different parts of the world.

Conversation ran through the learning. Staff introduced words and sentence patterns while talking with children about their activities. However, the October 2024 inspection identified uneven vocabulary teaching: some staff were unclear about the intended language, including mathematical terms during water play. Children consequently sometimes had difficulty putting their understanding into words. More consistent vocabulary teaching was the improvement required.

Care and Support

Relationships received deliberate attention in October 2024, especially for children whose experience of adults beyond their families was limited. Children approached staff to share discoveries or request help with an apron or a minor injury. For families, that willingness to seek help is a useful sign of trust.

Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities included adapting everyday arrangements. A child who struggled to sit at the snack table could have their snack brought to them, allowing participation to fit the child rather than insisting on one routine. Staff also adjusted learning using their checks on children’s progress.

Sharing, taking turns and learning how to be kind were part of the day. Children concentrated on chosen activities, and the atmosphere was calm. Safeguarding arrangements were effective in October 2024.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Greenfield does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. The federation relationship should not be treated as securing admission to Hurst Drive.

Preparation for the next stage included gathering for stories and nursery rhymes, learning to share and following familiar routines. These are practical foundations for joining a new class; they are separate from the allocation of a school place.

Practical Information

In October 2024, Greenfield operated Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 3:30pm, for 38 weeks of the year. Children accessed a 15-hour free entitlement, and arrangements existed for 30-hour provision. These were opening and funding arrangements at that time, rather than an individual child’s session timetable.

For nursery enquiries, contact the Greenfield school office. The federation’s contact form lets families select Greenfield Nursery Office, directing the enquiry to the nursery team.
