Sand, water and construction blocks give Oakview’s nursery learning a practical shape. Children explore materials, build models and develop stories through pretend play, linking early language and number skills to things they can handle and change.
The nursery belongs to Oakview Primary School on Andrews Lane in Cheshunt. Its September 2026 intake covers children born between 1st September 2022 and 31st August 2023. Morning and full-day patterns give families two distinct ways to organise attendance.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning brings together physical development, communication, social skills and early literacy through practical activities. In the nursery’s skills progression, children move from making marks towards recognisable pictures and letters. Books involve choosing favourites, developing vocabulary and retelling stories. Listening work includes environmental noises, rhyme and sounds made with instruments.
The home corner gives pretend play a familiar starting point. Construction develops from stacking blocks to making bridges and enclosed spaces; children can then add characters and a storyline. Sand activities explore what changes when water is added, while water play involves moving liquid between containers and investigating ice. These experiences connect language with observation and problem-solving.
Beyond these play areas, the early years programme includes cooking, seasonal observations and exploring musical instruments from different cultures. Outdoor activities involve games and equipment, alongside opportunities to visit places such as a park or farm. Posting a shared letter connects writing with a real purpose. Celebrations include Diwali, and children share family experiences during circle time, giving their own knowledge a place in the learning.
EYFS support staffing includes paediatric first-aid training. For additional learning needs, the school uses an assess, plan, do, review cycle, with the class teacher responsible for daily support and the SEND coordinator involved when needed. Personal Learning Targets are developed with families and revisited each term, giving parents a role in deciding and reviewing support.
The school building has wheelchair access and adapted changing and toilet facilities. Sensory resources have designated spaces, and additional learning spaces support interventions. These are school facilities rather than a description of a separate nursery room. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, then arrange contact with the SEND coordinator through the office.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor confers priority under the 2027/28 admission criteria. Families must submit a separate application through Hertfordshire County Council at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/admissions. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15th January 2027. Keep this separate from the nursery booking.
For younger children joining with identified SEND, tailored transition support may include extra visits, meetings with parents and professionals, or photo books. Annual SEN handovers also pass information between teachers. These arrangements support continuity of care; they do not change admission rights.
The 15-hour nursery pattern runs from 9am to 12pm. Eligible children can take the 30-hour option, from 9am to 3pm. The entitlement to 15 hours of early education starts in the term following a child’s third birthday; the longer funded pattern depends on eligibility.
Separate application routes serve the two nursery patterns. For an in-year nursery enquiry, contact the school office on 01992 939979 or email admin@oakviewprimary.com.

No. Nursery attendance does not guarantee admission or give priority under the 2027/28 criteria. A separate Reception application is required through Hertfordshire County Council, with a deadline of 15th January 2027 for September 2027 entry.
Families help develop Personal Learning Targets, which are reviewed termly. The class teacher is the first contact for concerns, with the SEND coordinator available through the office.
