Talk, play and space to learn outdoors give Christ Church’s nursery its character. This is the nursery class within Christ Church CofE (VA) Primary School and Nursery in Ware, welcoming children aged 3 and 4. Families can choose a morning, an afternoon or the longer 30-hour pattern.
In July 2023, children made a positive start in nursery, with learning planned carefully and staff helping them make use of both the indoor and outdoor spaces. Those are useful strengths for a child beginning school life.
Conversation and play do substantial teaching work here. In July 2023, adults used both effectively to build children’s knowledge and skills, supported by an organised curriculum. For parents, that means play has a learning purpose: adult interaction helps children develop what they know and can do.
Indoor learning space is complemented by an outdoor learning environment. Staff helped children use both successfully, making the physical surroundings part of the teaching rather than simply somewhere to spend a session.
Books are introduced as children begin at the school, with rhymes and shared stories forming regular experiences. There is also a caution about early reading: in July 2023, additional reading practice across the school varied in quality, and some children needing help progressed more slowly than they could. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Starting nursery received specific attention in July 2023: children settled successfully because adults prepared them for the change. Early-years routines also became established quickly. Together, preparation and familiar routines helped children adjust to their new setting.
For September 2026 starters, settling sessions formed part of the new-starter arrangements shared with families. This gives parents a practical point of involvement before attendance begins.
Families with concerns about special educational needs or disabilities can arrange an appointment with the school’s SENCo. That provides a direct route for discussing a child’s needs. Food brought into school must exclude nuts because of allergies, a practical restriction to bear in mind when preparing anything to eat.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
Monday to Friday, morning sessions run from 9:00am to 12:00pm; afternoons run from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. The 30-hour pattern covers 9:00am to 3:00pm on those same days. These session times help families plan work and collection; confirm booking commitments with the School Office.
Morning doors open at 8:50am, while afternoon doors close at 3:10pm. Keep those door arrangements separate from the session times when organising the journey.
September is the usual starting point, with entry at other times dependent on vacancies. Contact the School Office on 01920 462158 or email admin@christchurch.herts.sch.uk for availability, waiting lists or a nursery tour. An online new-starter form is offered, with a paper option too.
Children aged 3 and 4 can attend. The usual start is September following their third birthday; entry from the term after that birthday may be considered if there is capacity.
