Story acting, sign language and a garden give Kingshill’s nursery day its character. The provision belongs to Kingshill Infant School on Heath Drive in Ware, with morning, afternoon and full-day attendance patterns. This is an introduction to learning within an infant school, where communication has a clear place in the early years curriculum.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 17 and 18 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning combines activities led by adults with exploration children choose themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects creative work, physical development and understanding the world. Art and design use topics, while technology becomes part of children’s own exploration through Bee-Bots and iPads. These give children concrete ways to investigate and try ideas.
Maths has a weekly taught lesson connected to the topic, alongside opportunities within children’s chosen play. Physical development includes a directed PE lesson each week. The combination gives some learning a scheduled place while allowing children to pursue interests through their surroundings.
Stories also become something to do. In January 2023, nursery children acted out stories they had heard, and early years activities used signing to help children communicate about their plans for the day. Read Write Inc. Phonics begins in the nursery’s summer term, giving early reading a defined starting point rather than making it the whole nursery experience.
The garden adds an outdoor setting for learning. In January 2023, the extensive early years outdoor space was earmarked for changes to make its resources serve learning more effectively. A separate school-wide concern concerned uneven phonics teaching: opportunities to practise sounds aloud differed between groups, affecting engagement and potentially the pace of progress. Further staff training and sharing effective teaching approaches were required.
Tapestry connects learning with home. Children have individual learning journals containing photographs, and parents can contribute their own pictures. That makes communication two-way, with experiences from home able to join the record of nursery learning.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school has a SENCO and assistant SENCO. Its Speech and Language Hub supports staff training and communication strategies. Where individual plans are used, families review them at parent evenings or through an arranged meeting, giving parents a place in discussions about support.
Kingshill treats behaviour as a skill children learn through teaching, examples and practice. Its behaviour curriculum includes Nursery and can be adapted for SEND and other additional needs. The school aims to clarify expected behaviour, giving children opportunities to practise what they are learning.
Lunch club requires a packed lunch from home. Breakfast Club serves cereal, brioche or toast, with food offered between 7:30am and 8:15am. For children using that additional care, breakfast is part of the routine before learning begins.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing nursery and securing a school place as two separate decisions.
The core nursery offer runs Monday to Friday during term time. Families take either 15 hours across five mornings or five afternoons, or 30 hours across five full days. The pattern therefore asks for attendance throughout the week rather than a selection of individual days.
Nursery opening hours are 08:30 to 15:30 during term time, unless otherwise stated. Lunch club and wraparound care are additional options, and funding codes can cover additional hours up to 30 hours. Contact the school for current charges.
Applications go to nurseryadmissions@kingshill.herts.sch.uk, or can be delivered to the office. Questions about additional care go to nurserywraparound@kingshill.herts.sch.uk. These separate contacts give families a direct route for arranging the nursery place and the care around it.
