Nursery at Alderman Bolton Primary School

Colour mixing, early phonics and sustained outdoor play give Alderman Bolton’s nursery its shape. This is the school’s provision for two- and three-year-olds, on Longdin Street in Latchford, Warrington. Children begin their education within the primary school, with a nursery teacher and teaching assistants forming the nursery team.
Morning and afternoon sessions each have their own start and finish. Outdoor play has longer, continuous periods, giving children time to stay with an activity rather than treating outside time simply as a short break.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach includes exploring through play, persisting with an idea and thinking about how things work. Art makes that concrete. Nursery children experiment with mixing colours, try drawing tools and use construction materials. They also explore textures and join materials together. These activities give small hands practice while allowing children to make choices about what they create.
Seasonal work includes drawing spring flowers in the outdoor area. Creative learning uses materials inside and outside, linking observation with making rather than keeping art confined to a table. In October 2022, Ofsted found that early-years teaching helped children build their skills and knowledge, and that phonics teaching started in Nursery. That gives early language and sound work a place alongside practical exploration.
At the inspection on 4 and 5 October 2022, the youngest children adapted readily to routines, developed curiosity and independence, and communicated confidently; early-years children were also happy and safe. These findings offer reassurance about the foundations of settling and participation.
For children with additional needs, the EYFS team works with outreach teams when appropriate to adjust provision and obtain specialist support. The school uses Wellcomm Toolkit to identify and support speech, language and communication development. This gives language concerns a specific assessment and support route.
Parents can arrange a SENCO appointment through the office. Termly SEN coffee mornings bring families together with specialists, including SENDIAS and Addvanced Solutions, creating another opportunity to discuss support. Physical access includes ramps at ground-floor external doors, alongside accessible toilets and changing facilities. Nursery lunch is timetabled between 11:30am and 12:15pm.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Warrington Borough Council’s online primary admissions route, meeting the normal deadline. For September 2027 entry, applications become available in October 2026 and close at midnight on 15 January 2027.
Attendance does carry a conditional priority for that cycle: children must have attended Alderman Bolton nursery for at least two terms when the application is made. This category follows looked-after and previously looked-after children, then siblings. Children whose EHCP names the school are admitted before those categories are applied. If a category has more applicants than remaining places, proximity determines allocation within it. The practical distinction matters: qualifying attendance affects the order of consideration, but families still need to apply and a place remains subject to allocation.
The morning session runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; the afternoon session runs from 12:10pm to 3:10pm. Those session end times are useful anchors for planning the family day.
Contact the school office on 01925 633262, or use the enquiry form, to begin an enquiry. School visits can be arranged by appointment through the office, giving families an opportunity to meet the headteacher and receive helpful information before making their decision.
