Play chosen by children, activities shaped by their interests and outdoor learning in all weather give Evelyn Street’s nursery its character. This is the nursery within Evelyn Street Primary Academy and Nursery in Warrington, with provision for two-year-olds. An assistant headteacher combines the roles of nursery teacher and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) lead, linking nursery teaching with leadership of early education.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 2 and 3 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Children have room to make choices. They can join other children, work with an adult or play independently, with learning built around practical experience. Adults prepare activities and demonstrate how to tackle them, alongside time for children to pursue their own ideas. Discussions about children’s interests help shape the planning, which also takes account of their development. This gives adult guidance and children’s curiosity a place in the day.
The EYFS brings together language, relationships and physical development with early literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. In parent language, children practise communicating, managing feelings, moving, exploring numbers and making things. Learning also involves persistence: trying again when an activity proves difficult and finding ways to develop an idea.
An outdoor learning area can be used whatever the weather. Owl Wood, the school’s woodland site within its grounds, adds a named physical setting for Forest School. Access requires a qualified Forest School Leader. The school connects this woodland approach with its existing early years outdoor play, giving exploration beyond the classroom a clear place in its curriculum.
In July 2024, early years children behaved very well, knew their routines and worked together. Many early years staff had expertise in teaching young children, including two-year-olds. For families considering an early start, that combination of familiar routines and experience with younger children matters.
The nursery teacher and EYFS lead is trained in designated safeguarding lead duties. Across the school, staff receive safeguarding training annually, with further training during the year. The wider team includes a special educational needs coordinator and a pastoral mentor, both with mental health first aid roles.
Family support extends beyond classroom concerns. The school’s Welfare Team meets fortnightly to consider issues including additional needs and barriers to learning. Its Joined Up Care Meetings identify individual support routes, while Early Help can bring family concerns together in an agreed Family Plan. These arrangements give parents a route for discussing needs that affect their child’s experience of nursery.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Application forms are available from Warrington Borough Council Admissions Department.
Preparation for the next stage includes encouraging families to talk about starting Reception and practise independence with dressing, lunch and personal belongings. These are practical preparation steps, separate from the allocation of a school place.
Parents considering the school can arrange a visit and meet the Principal. The school office opens from 8am to 4pm; telephone 01925 495567 to make contact. A visit offers an opportunity to discuss how the nursery’s emphasis on play, independence and outdoor learning fits your child.
