Play, conversation and growing independence give Seedlings its character. This is Great Sankey Primary School's nursery provision, admitting children from age 3 and forming part of the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) team in Great Sankey, Warrington.
Ofsted judged early years to be at a Strong standard in November 2025. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than constituting a separate nursery rating.
Learning combines play with planned activities. The EYFS curriculum provides the framework, with attention to how children learn and how their skills develop. In practical terms, staff assess each child's development and use that understanding to plan subsequent learning. The emphasis is on building from the child's existing skills.
Books and conversation have a clear purpose. In November 2025, early years teaching gave children opportunities to extend their vocabulary through purposeful exchanges with adults. Staff helped children who were hesitant to participate, making engagement part of their work rather than leaving quieter children on the sidelines. Reading materials developed children's understanding as well as their enjoyment of books.
Independence also matters here. Early years children helped others with learning through their roles as experts, while star of the week provided another form of recognition. These are concrete ways for children to take responsibility and have their efforts acknowledged. The November 2025 findings described children as settled, inquisitive and increasingly independent, with learning organised to develop language, early reading and writing.
An early years leader heads the team and holds Specialist Leader expertise in EYFS, including experience supporting other schools with their early years development. This gives the nursery a place within a wider early years team, with specialist leadership overseeing the phase.
Parents contribute to children's learning. Staff keep families informed about teaching and progress, helping learning at home and nursery work together. In November 2025, early years practice included learning adjusted to children's individual needs and collaboration with other professionals. Adults also encouraged reluctant children to join in, supporting participation alongside skill development.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school's support process includes discussing assessments with parents, agreeing provision and reviewing progress at least each term. Families can contact the school office to speak with the SEND coordinator. That provides a clear route for raising concerns and contributing to support plans.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Warrington's local authority coordinates school admissions; The Challenge Academy Trust is the school's admissions authority.
Once a school place has been confirmed, families are invited to a summer-term welcome meeting with teaching and support staff. Children can visit their future classroom and meet their teacher and classmates before starting. These arrangements help children become familiar with the next stage. They are transition support, separate from the decision about allocating a place.
