At a Glance

A mud kitchen, daily outdoor play and time to follow a child's own ideas give Lowton St Mary's nursery its character. Three- and four-year-olds belong to the school's Early Years Hub, with a qualified teacher, a teaching assistant working full time and another assistant supporting mornings. This is a nursery day built around play, with focused teaching woven through it.

At the Ofsted inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025, early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. Relationships and routines were strengths; some curriculum areas still needed clearer learning content.

The Nursery Day

Carpet time opens the day at 9am, followed by stories or phonics according to the point in the year. From 9.20am, children move into play and learning activities, sometimes choosing their own direction and sometimes joining an adult or a group. Later carpet sessions bring children together for maths, news, stories or circle time. Full-day children go to lunch at 11.30am; afternoon learning combines another group gathering with time to explore, before news or a story towards home time.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises learning into seven areas. Here, planned teaching sits alongside In the Moment Planning: adults notice what interests children, talk with them and use those interactions to extend their learning. Focused phonics and maths sessions give children specific skills to practise again during play. Children have both time to pursue an idea and teaching that introduces something new.

Inside, children can choose the home corner, work with playdough, practise small hand movements in the fine-motor area or explore the writing, reading and maths spaces. Outdoors, daily access brings sand and water play, large construction activities and the mud kitchen. These are concrete opportunities to build, experiment and talk together. Nursery PE also includes cat and mouse, tag, and domes and dishes, introducing rules through team games.

Curriculum development. In January 2025, a few early years areas needed a more precise sequence of essential knowledge. This affected children's understanding and sometimes the suitability of activities, leaving gaps in learning. For parents, that is a reason to consider what children are learning alongside how much choice they have.

Care and Support

Warm connections with teachers helped early years children feel secure in January 2025, and they became familiar with classroom expectations quickly. Class Dojo is the nursery's main communication channel, carrying reminders, school notices and glimpses of children's activities. Parents can also use it to send absence queries.

Food has several routes. Children staying all day can bring lunch from home or have a charged school dinner, chosen through Evolve School Hub. Fruit or vegetables are free each day, with access to the snack table during the day. A separate parental contribution supports hot or savoury snacks, including crumpets, toast, and cheese with crackers.

For additional needs, the school's SENCo and pastoral support officers can be contacted through the office. Its SEND offer for 2023/2024 describes Individual Support Plans reviewed with parents each term and support tailored to need. The school building is on one level, a practical feature for families considering physical access.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admissions priority. The school's admissions guidance explicitly excludes nursery attendance from consideration, so familiarity with the setting does not change the application's standing.

Families must make a separate Reception application through the council’s School Placements Team and meet the closing date for their entry year. A supplementary form must also go to the school. Transition support is a separate matter: the school's 2023/2024 SEND offer describes INSPIRE sessions for new Reception children, with additional opportunities to explore new surroundings and meet adults for children needing extra help.

Practical Information

Choose a morning from 9am to noon or a full day from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday during term time. The nursery accepts both 15-hour and 30-hour funding; families using 15-hour funding can pay for extra sessions. School dinners and the contribution for additional snacks are separate charges. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery applications go directly to the school on 01942 769710, and application forms can also be downloaded and returned using the nursery page's email route. Uniform is required. The September 2025 policy specifies black formal school shoes and school book bags, so clothing and bags need planning alongside the session pattern.
