Nursery at St Oswald's Catholic Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

An EYFS woodland gives early learning at St Oswald's a setting beyond the classroom. It is a concrete feature of the school's early years provision, with outdoor space used to extend the curriculum. The nursery belongs to St Oswald's Catholic Primary School in Padgate, Warrington, within a Catholic school whose educational aims include children's spiritual and social development.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 27 to 28 September 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Play shapes the school's EYFS curriculum. Its approach centres on children exploring, persevering with activities and developing ideas of their own. For parents, the emphasis is on learning through involvement: trying something, working through a challenge and finding another way to do it.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings care and learning together. Language and communication, emotional and social development, and physical development form its starting points. Mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world extend those foundations. Development Matters provides guidance for delivering this curriculum, giving staff a framework for supporting children's development rather than treating every child as progressing at the same pace.

The EYFS woodland adds an outdoor dimension to that approach. Exploration can take learning beyond an indoor activity, while the curriculum's emphasis on independent thinking gives children opportunities to develop their own ideas. In September 2023, children in early years became familiar with routines promptly and worked cooperatively. Those habits matter in a shared learning space.

Care and Support

Relationships with families are part of the EYFS approach, alongside responding to each child's needs. The wider school's communication arrangements include meetings with parents and opportunities to discuss concerns with teachers. These give families a route to talk about development and learning.

For concerns about additional needs, the first contact is the child's class teacher, with the school's special educational needs coordinator also accessible through the office. This provides a clear route for raising questions about support. Accessibility has physical detail too: ramps serve the main entrance, the rear hall door and the infant entrance, helping families who need step-free access.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Warrington Borough Council's online admissions route. The school also requires its own application form and an Archdiocese Supplementary Faith form, returned directly to the school.

For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was midnight on 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed. Keep the Reception application separate from nursery arrangements.

Transition support follows an offer of a place. Successful applicants are invited to summer-term induction activities, and families receive information about the initial weeks in September. This helps prepare children and parents for the change; it does not confer an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Contact the school office on 01925 813015 or stoswalds_primary@sch.warrington.gov.uk for general enquiries. Prospective parents can arrange a school visit by telephone, providing an opportunity to discuss the provision with staff.

The site is on Padgate Lane beside St Oswald's Catholic Church. Families can use the church car park, and Padgate train station is within walking distance. These are useful practical details when considering the journey with a young child.
