Songs, rhymes and first friendships give Woodloes’ nursery its clearest character. Learning to recognise sounds sits alongside learning to get along with other children, making the provision about social confidence as well as the beginnings of reading.
Saplings is part of Woodloes Primary School in Warwick, on Deansway in Woodloes Park Estate. Its staffing includes an Early Years Lead Practitioner, with learning support assistants assigned to pre-school. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 September 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Early reading begins with listening. In September 2024, nursery children learnt about sounds through singing and rhyming, building preparation for later phonics teaching. For parents, the useful distinction is the starting point: children encounter sounds through familiar forms of language before moving into formal phonics.
Friendship is another part of early learning here. Children begin learning how to form friendships and sustain them during early years. Alongside the work with sounds, this gives two concrete strands to the nursery experience: preparation for reading and practice in relationships. Both matter when a child is beginning to learn alongside others.
Settling was a positive feature in September 2024. Children in early years adjusted well and were beginning to handle their emotions and behaviour. This matters beyond the first separation from home: managing feelings helps children take part in learning and relationships.
For additional needs, the school uses a staged process of identifying difficulties, planning support, putting it into practice and reviewing the response. Individual Education Plans give personalised targets, strategies and interventions, and are shared with parents at each term’s end. That creates a regular point for families to discuss what their child is working towards.
Specialist involvement can include Speech and Language Therapy, Educational Psychology and Specialist Support Teaching Services. The school also uses support for communication and emotional regulation. These are school-wide arrangements, so their relevance to an individual nursery child depends on that child’s needs. Parents can contact the SENDCo through the school office on 01926 497491 to discuss concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. The route is Warwickshire Schools Admission Service; applications made directly to Woodloes are not accepted.
The nursery’s songs and rhymes prepare children for later phonics. That learning preparation is separate from the allocation of school places. Treat the Reception application as a fresh step, even if your child already attends Saplings.
