Songs, rhymes and learning to make friends give Barmston’s early years provision its character. The nursery forms part of Barmston Village Primary School at Barmston Centre in Washington, with published morning and afternoon sessions. Their timings matter when fitting childcare around work.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at its November 2023 inspection. This judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play is the starting point. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach here recognises that children develop at different speeds, with encouragement helping them build confidence in learning. Exploring, keeping involved in an activity and working out ideas are its central learning habits. For parents, that means an emphasis on how children learn as well as what they learn.
Language has a concrete place in that picture. In November 2023, children in early years were developing their speaking and understanding successfully through rhyme and song. These activities give young children practice with words and sounds through something they can join in with.
Outdoor learning is planned into the nursery day, so learning extends beyond indoor activities. The school’s No Outsiders programme also includes early years, using picture books to explore difference and identity. Alongside this, children in early years were learning friendship and cooperation in November 2023. Learning to get along with others is part of the education here, alongside communication.
Emotional learning starts in early years. In November 2023, children were being taught to recognise and communicate feelings and to handle their emotions. This gives them ways to express a worry or frustration as they learn to take part in a group.
The staffing structure includes a nursery teacher within the school’s early years team. The EYFS lead also holds a deputy safeguarding role, linking early years leadership with the school’s child protection arrangements.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school’s approach distinguishes support that goes beyond, or differs from, ordinary classroom provision. Parents can contact the office to speak with the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). That provides a direct route for discussing an individual child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year.
The school directs families to Sunderland’s online primary admissions route. Families living outside Sunderland apply through their home local authority. Keep this application separate from nursery registration: joining the nursery is not a substitute for applying again for Reception.
Morning Nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; Afternoon Nursery runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The nursery timetable totals 15 hours each week. These session boundaries give families clear collection times around which to plan.

Physical access is useful to consider when planning a visit. The school building is on one storey, with some steps to teaching spaces. Step-free routes use the main entrance or sloping paths and a ramp from the yard; a designated disabled parking space sits beside the main entrance.
Morning Nursery is 8.30am to 11.30am, and Afternoon Nursery is 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The nursery timetable is 15 hours per week.
