Nursery rhymes travel home, while Little Wandle Foundations for phonics brings early reading preparation into play at Lambton Primary School’s nursery. Language is a clear thread. Children have both activities they choose themselves and experiences guided by adults, giving them different ways to practise communicating.
This is the school’s own nursery class in Lambton Village, Washington. Children can start in the term following their third birthday. The provision runs morning and afternoon sessions, so the practical shape of the day is a session rather than an assumed full day of childcare.
Talking, listening and learning to share give the day its substance. Ofsted’s July 2024 early-years observations showed how social play and language learning worked together. Sharing resources gave children opportunities to talk together, while adults introduced vocabulary through conversation and demonstrations with equipment. Inspectors also found confidence and creativity in the children’s play.
Little Wandle Foundations for phonics is the nursery’s named approach to preparing for reading. Its combination of adult guidance and children’s own choices addresses communication, language and literacy: the early-years learning here includes listening, speaking and exploring the foundations of reading. Nursery rhymes are sent home regularly for families to practise together. That gives parents a concrete connection with classroom learning.
Beyond reading preparation, the early-years history plan begins with topics within living memory, keeping the starting point close to children’s experience. The school garden includes a Lambton Worm feature and is described as a space for pupils of all ages. It adds a distinctive physical feature to the wider school grounds.
In July 2024, early-years children understood the established routines, and activities had clear learning purposes. Those familiar patterns supported their ability to keep trying, explore and get along with others. Parents’ feedback also highlighted growing confidence in early years.
Tapestry, the online journal used by the early-years team, shares children’s learning, experiences and development with parents and carers. It gives families a way to follow what their child is doing between conversations with staff. Regular nursery rhymes to practise at home provide another small, practical link between nursery and family life.
A separate application is required. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Lambton. Families must apply again during the advertised Reception application period through Sunderland’s coordinated admissions scheme. The local authority determines the criteria and allocates places against them.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions. A child’s familiarity with nursery does not remove the need to make that application.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon session is 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Gates are supervised from 8.40am, with nursery doors opening at 8.45am. These are the timings to plan around for the morning handover.
The nursery admissions page gives an entitlement of 15 hours each week from the term after a child’s third birthday. For enquiries, contact the school office on 0191 481 3993 or email worm@lambtonprimary.co.uk. Families can also arrange a school visit through the office, making this the direct route for discussing the provision.
