Vegetable soup, programmable Bee-Bots and Forest Schools give Rickleton’s nursery a practical character. Children investigate how things work, prepare food and explore learning outdoors: concrete experiences rather than just instructions to follow.
This is Rickleton Primary School’s own nursery provision in Washington. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Making vegetable soup brings several kinds of learning together. Nursery children explored vegetables through their senses and learned about farming and food origins before preparing the ingredients. Handwashing came before hats and aprons, followed by careful cutting. Children practised keeping fingers clear and paying attention to the task, then ate their soup as a snack. The activity connects curiosity about food with practical responsibility.
The preparation mattered as much as the finished soup. Some vegetables proved harder to cut, and children persisted with the task. Standing around the table helped them work. This is a specific example of children trying a real task, adjusting their approach and seeing an edible result.
Bee-Bots provide another hands-on activity. Nursery children have experimented with programming these devices through simple sequences of instructions, alongside learning about online safety and investigating how things operate. It gives an abstract idea, putting instructions in order, a physical form children can test.
Forest Schools adds an outdoor strand to the nursery’s learning. Within the early years curriculum, children develop initial reading skills and mathematical understanding. These are foundations for later learning, alongside the nursery’s practical examples of exploration and making.
Food also becomes a learning experience here: the soup activity included hygiene, safe preparation and tasting what children had made. It gives children a reason to practise care with tools and ingredients.
For additional needs, the school’s support framework begins with adapting classroom teaching to what a child already understands. Practical methods and specific strategies can help children take part. Where further support is needed, teachers can arrange small-group work, assess its impact and discuss progress with the SEND coordinator each term. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a nursery-specific intervention menu.
Parents can raise SEND concerns through the school office. For other questions or worries, office staff direct families to the appropriate member of the team, providing a clear starting point for communication.
Separate admissions. Attending Rickleton’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions, rather than assuming that attendance secures the next place.
