Minibeast hunting in the early years garden gives this nursery a concrete point of distinction: children take their learning outdoors to investigate living things. Nursery belongs to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Washington, on Village Lane, within a Catholic school community.
For September 2024, the planned nursery intake was 26 children, split between 16 places for the 30-hour early education entitlement and 10 for the 15-hour universal entitlement. Those figures describe that intake, rather than today's vacancies. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 8 to 9 November 2023; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Conversation and predictable routines give the early years day its shape. In November 2023, children showed confidence in their learning, exchanged ideas and practised waiting for their turn. Carefully organised activities supported language development, with children extending their vocabulary through talking together. For parents, that places everyday communication alongside the practical business of learning to join in.
Outdoor exploration has a specific home in the early years garden. In May 2026, nursery children searched there for minibeasts. A different topic, Let's Travel, had children exploring a Washington Village map in January 2024, recognising familiar landmarks and discussing their experiences of those places. Both examples connect learning with things children can observe or already know.
Little Wandle supports phonics teaching in the Foundation Stage. Nursery parents were invited to an October 2023 information session about Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, with planned advice on supporting reading at home. These are concrete links between classroom learning and family involvement.
Additional support involves the class teacher and the school's SEND coordinator. Support Plans are discussed with parents each term, giving families a regular opportunity to review their child's needs and the strategies being used. Classroom adjustments can include sensory toys or wobble cushions, depending on the child.
Speech and Language Therapy and the Autism Outreach Team are among the services involved in supporting children with additional needs. A home and school contact book can also be used when agreed to be helpful. Step-free entry is possible through the main entrance and staff car park, and the building occupies a single level, a practical consideration for families with mobility needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must submit a separate application to their home local authority through the normal admissions process. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Nursery attendance itself gives no priority within the 2027–2028 oversubscription criteria, so familiarity with the school must be kept separate from securing a place.
For children with SEND changing classes, support information passes to the next teacher before the move, with a planning meeting to discuss it. A summer transition morning introduces children to their next classroom and teacher. This supports preparation for a change of class; it does not alter admission rights.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am. The 30-hour pattern runs Monday to Thursday, starting at 8.45am and finishing at 3.25pm, with lunch scheduled between 11.45am and 1pm. The longer pattern therefore needs a different collection arrangement from the morning session.
School term dates differ from Sunderland City Council's calendar, so families should use the school's dates when planning childcare. Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 0191 917 2484 or enquiries@wsj.bwcet.com. Visits can be arranged by telephone.

Children have explored the early years garden while learning about minibeasts, including a bug hunt in May 2026.
Speak first with the class teacher, then the SEND coordinator if concerns continue. Support Plans are reviewed with parents each term.
