Early sounds and letters start at nursery here. Mesty Croft Primary’s nursery belongs to the school’s early years provision in Wednesbury, with Morning Nursery and Afternoon Nursery groups. Its character combines the beginnings of reading with learning how to cooperate with other children.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 February 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Reading has a clear starting point. In February 2023, children began learning sounds and letters when they joined nursery, and phonics training covered support assistants as well as teaching staff. For parents, the practical implication is that early reading work involves the adults supporting children’s learning, alongside their teachers.
Social learning matters too. In February 2023, good behaviour extended to early years: children practised paying attention, responding to directions and working together, while learning consideration for others. These are useful beginnings for taking part in a group, where a child needs to hear an instruction and cooperate with a classmate.
An example of learning beyond the classroom involved EYFS and Key Stage 1 children meeting a farmer through Teams. Following success in the Sandwell Scarecrow Competition, they took a virtual farm tour, asked questions and met animals. This was a particular activity, rather than a regular timetable promise. It gave children a concrete subject to explore through conversation, with animals and farm life providing the focus.
Mesty Croft sees cooperation between home and school as important. The school believes children achieve most when families and staff respect one another and work towards shared aims. For a nursery family, that makes the relationship with staff part of the choice, alongside the session itself.
The September 2020 team structure combined the EYFS leadership and SENCo roles. This historical arrangement linked early education leadership with responsibility for special educational needs. Families considering that support should keep their child’s individual needs central to the nursery decision.
Reception admission. Attending Mesty Croft’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception application process and meet the deadline for their child’s intake. Choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.
Keep that distinction clear when planning ahead: learning early sounds and practising cooperation can prepare a child for school life, but those experiences do not themselves settle the admissions decision.
