Keyboards, steel pans and caterpillars becoming butterflies give this nursery a distinctive mix of music and discovery. At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Darlaston, nursery learning sits within the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with Catholic faith woven into activities alongside children's interests.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 25 and 26 April 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Adults working with children aged three to five were skilled in responding to their needs, giving families a specific early years finding to weigh alongside the everyday provision.
Short teaching sessions combine with play and learning indoors and outside. Children work together as a class, in smaller groups and in pairs, practising how to listen and cooperate. Staff watch and talk with them, then adapt activities and vocabulary to extend their learning. Topics provide a starting point; children's own interests also shape what happens next.
The EYFS brings together language, movement and social development with early literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent terms, conversation and physical activity matter alongside books and numbers. Resources are chosen around children's interests and developing skills, so play becomes a way to investigate, make decisions and solve problems.
Music has a concrete presence. Nursery children have played keyboards and steel pans, while Rock It Music works with children from nursery onwards. Early years music features in daily routines as well as separate lessons. This gives children opportunities to explore instruments alongside their other activities.
Planned early years experiences include watching caterpillars become butterflies, a mobile farm visit and trips to Walsall Arboretum and Tanglewood at Cannock Chase. These connect classroom ideas with animals and places children can encounter directly. Faith also has its own place: nursery RE topics include creation and baptism, while early years children explore belief through discussion, role-play and collective worship.
Settling starts with understanding what a child already knows. During induction, staff gather information about earlier experiences at home and in previous settings, then use it to build subsequent learning. Familiar daily routines support the adjustment to nursery.
Home learning has practical prompts. The weekly Parent Focus email includes the coming week's learning, with examples such as a rhyme, vocabulary, a book and a mathematics focus. Families receive termly targets and can join learning workshops at least once a term, giving parents specific ways to participate rather than simply receive updates.
School lunches can be booked through ScoPay, with orders due by the night before. That makes meal planning part of the family's evening routine. For support needs, the school's SEND page links families to its Local Offer and Walsall's Local Offer. Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the designated lead or a deputy, providing a clear contact route.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a distinct task, even when your child already attends nursery.
Nursery opening hours run from 8.40am to 3.15pm. Gates close at 8.55am; after that, an adult must sign the child in at the office. Plan the morning around that earlier cut-off.
The nursery uniform pairs a red sweatshirt with navy joggers. Used uniform is also obtainable through the school, which can help families organise clothing. For nursery enquiries, contact the office on 0121 568 6496 or email postbox@st-josephs.walsall.sch.uk.
