Nursery at Tameside Primary Academy
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Play, practical maths and an Immersive Room give Tameside’s early years provision its character. The nursery serves children aged two to four within the academy’s large, purpose-built Early Years setting, with TinyTwos providing for two-year-olds. Families can choose morning, afternoon or full-day care, making the provision relevant to different childcare patterns.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 14 and 15 February 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with play used to develop language, movement and social confidence alongside early literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding of the world. Talking comes before writing. The emphasis gives children opportunities to develop the language they will use to explain ideas and take part in learning.
E3L means Excite, Explore, Excel Learning. Early years themes include Toy Story, Let’s Pretend and Through the Window, giving activities a shared context. Children learn outdoors as well as inside, choose materials independently and make decisions about their work. Resources carry both picture and word labels, supporting children as they connect language with the things they use.
Mathematics is practical: Numicon and Base 10 equipment help children explore numbers through objects, discussion and problem solving. Daily Story Escape sessions bring shared books into the routine. Technology adds microphones, recording devices and programmable toys; the Immersive Room lets early years children experience settings including the Ocean, Deep Space and the Rainforest. These are concrete ways to explore ideas beyond the classroom.
In February 2023, early years children maintained concentration during activities and used an electronic music-making programme skilfully. Teaching built activities around clearly selected knowledge, helping children deepen their understanding rather than simply move between tasks.
Settling starts before the first session. Families joining early years are invited to information evenings and receive a new pupil pack; stay-and-play sessions introduce children to their surroundings and teachers. September starters also receive home visits, giving parents a private opportunity to discuss concerns in familiar surroundings. In February 2023, children adapted quickly to early years routines.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), transition meetings can bring together existing professional agencies, nursery staff, the new teacher and the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo). Support can include individual or small-group work and an Individual Education Plan with specific, manageable targets agreed between school and home.
Parent communication includes Class Dojo, opportunities to discuss progress with the teacher three times a year and an annual summer report. The support structure includes a SENCo, SEND assistant and pastoral team. Families can raise SEND questions through admin@tpa.shirelandcat.net, providing a direct route for discussing their child’s needs.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority for one. Families must make a separate application through the local authority where they live, naming Tameside Primary Academy. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery arrangements.
Transition support is a different matter. Children with SEND receive extra time to meet their next teachers and become familiar with their learning spaces before the academic year begins. Where personal or medical care requires individual support, a planning meeting introduces the adults involved in those duties.
Nursery applications go directly to the academy. Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am, using the nursery doors, with collection along the pathway beside the School Office. Tiny Two’s runs from 8.50am to 11.50am, using its own door and the same collection pathway.
Funded 15- and 30-hour places are offered from the term after a child’s third birthday, with nursery entry possible in September, January or April. Eligible two-year-olds whose families receive extra support can access 15 funded hours a week over 38 weeks. Working-parent funding requires eligibility to be reconfirmed every three months.
Meals, nappies, uniform, trips and additional activities are charged separately from funded childcare hours; those extras are voluntary and cannot be compulsory for access to a funded place. Contact the school for current charges. Enquiries and tour bookings can be made on 0121 556 0340; the School Office accepts enquiries between 8.50am and 4pm, Monday to Friday during term time.
