At a Glance

Traditional tales, early phonics and investigations outdoors give Meerkat Class its character. This is the nursery at St Michael's East Wickham Church of England Primary School in Welling, welcoming children aged three and four during school terms. It opened in September 2023.

Children belong to the school from the nursery stage, with their own classroom and outside area for learning. The combination matters: activities can move between indoor and outdoor spaces, rather than keeping exploration confined to a classroom.

The Nursery Day

Stories provide a starting point for learning. Traditional tales feature across the year, with activities connected to their characters and stories. Children are introduced to Little Wandle as the year develops, bringing the nursery into the school's approach to early phonics. At home, families are asked to spend at least ten minutes each day reading with their child or reading to them, and to record this in the reading record.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, mathematical understanding, movement, social development and exploration of the world. In Meerkat Class, that means developing vocabulary alongside number understanding, practising both small and larger movements, and learning about feelings and relationships. Children sometimes choose the activity; at other times an adult leads it.

Across early years, Literacy Tree supplies texts for English learning, while White Rose guides mathematics, including number, shape and measurement. Weekly religious education gives children opportunities to contribute questions and ideas to a shared RE book. Observations help staff plan what comes next for each child. Nursery curriculum maps cover learning each half term, giving families a connection between activities at school and support at home.

Local outings organised by the nursery team extend learning beyond school. Participation is optional, and an additional charge may apply.

Care and Support

Tapestry connects learning with home: staff share observations there, allowing parents to see what their child has been doing. Stay and Play sessions give families a more direct role, joining activities alongside their children. Parents can also request supportive meetings, and videos help them support learning at home.

For children attending from midday, including those staying for the full day, lunch can be an optional hot meal or a packed lunch supplied by parents. Breakfast is included with Breakfast Club. These arrangements make the meal choice part of planning the child's session.

The school's SENCO can be contacted through the office about special educational needs provision. This gives families a direct route for discussing their child's support needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. For entry in September 2027, applications are made online and the deadline is 15 January 2027.

Keep that application separate from choosing nursery sessions. Being familiar with the school and its learning approaches does not secure admission to the next stage.

Practical Information

Three session choices shape the week: mornings run from 8:40am to noon, afternoons from noon to 3:15pm, and full days from 8:40am to 3:15pm. Additional time beyond funded hours can be booked separately. Provision runs during school terms.

The nursery accepts both 15-hour and 30-hour funded entitlements. The 15-hour entitlement begins in the term after a child's third birthday; the 30-hour entitlement is for eligible working families. For the latter, families must apply for their code by the end of the month preceding the new term. The nursery can accept children from their third birthday.

Charges beyond funded entitlement are optional and do not determine access to a funded place. Contact the school for current charges. Nursery wraparound options include Breakfast Club from 7:30am to 8:40am and After School Club from 3:15pm to 4:30pm.
