Established care routines and uneven teaching define the early-years picture at Coxley. Sunbeams is the school's own pre-school provision for children aged 3 and 4, within Coxley Primary School in Wells. It brings nursery education into a primary-school setting, but the distinction between care and learning matters here.
In January 2026, the early-years judgement was Needs attention. Children's individual care needs were being met, while some were making less progress than they should. Families should weigh both parts of that picture.
Language, understanding and early reading are central to the learning picture. The early years foundation stage curriculum was well planned in January 2026, but staff training and expertise were insufficient to put those plans into practice consistently. A planned curriculum needs skilled delivery: some children were not progressing as far as their starting points warranted.
Adult conversation was a specific weakness. Staff did not consistently use interactions to extend children's vocabulary or help them explain their ideas, including children encountering difficulties with learning. For parents, the practical question is how adults develop a child's answer into a fuller conversation, rather than simply accept it.
Phonics received priority, providing a positive element within the early-years teaching. Elsewhere, children needed teaching better matched to their understanding: prompt reinforcement for those struggling and further learning for those ready. Unclear explanations and inconsistent checks meant staff did not always identify what each child needed next. Children also learned to cooperate with others from the early years onwards, giving social learning a place alongside language development.
Care was a clearer strength in January 2026. Established routines responded to individual children and helped them feel secure. Leaders worked with parents on transitions, making that partnership relevant to settling rather than merely an administrative contact.
Learning support needs closer scrutiny. The early-years findings identified insufficient help for children facing learning barriers to express their understanding. Families whose children need additional support should discuss how staff will recognise difficulties, develop communication and check whether the support is working.
The school has a SENCo enquiry route, alongside a designated safeguarding lead and deputy leads. Safeguarding concerns can be raised through the school office by telephone or email. That gives parents a direct route for discussing a child's needs or passing on a concern.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The Reception enquiry route is Somerset Direct, and Somerset's local authority acts as the admission authority.
Work with parents to ease transitions was an early-years strength in January 2026. That supports children's adjustment to change; it should be considered separately from the allocation of a Reception place.
