Nursery at Homerswood Primary and Nursery School

Mud pies, minibeast hunts and strawberries picked for snack time give Homerswood’s nursery its character. Play drives the learning, with children’s questions helping to shape topics alongside planned activities. This is a nursery where stories lead into making, movement and exploring living things.
The nursery belongs to Homerswood Primary and Nursery School in Welwyn Garden City, where children start from age 3. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 15 and 16 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Learning moves between the classroom and outdoor spaces. The nursery garden supports planting and physical play, while an outdoor kitchen gives children somewhere to make mud soup and pies. Children have also collected natural materials in the forest area to decorate butterflies after sharing The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Books become starting points for practical exploration.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of development. In parent language, these cover talking and listening, movement, relationships and emotions, early reading and writing, maths, discovering the world and creative expression. Homerswood gives language development particular emphasis and aims to build independence, curiosity and confidence.
Activities make those aims concrete. Children have planted cress, compared their heights using a chart and used tweezers with noodles during Chinese New Year celebrations. Climbing, pedalling, scooting and balancing develop larger movements; cutting and mark making give smaller hand movements attention too. These examples show learning through action rather than a day built around sitting still.
Music and languages add another dimension. Nursery music forms part of the Sing Up curriculum, while early years children encounter French through songs and groups named after French colours. The nursery’s Maths Mascots theme is 2D shapes, with a resource bag and ideas for practice at home. That gives families a practical connection to classroom learning.
Food appears in the learning as well as at snack time. Children have picked strawberries to eat and prepared fruit salad after reading Oliver’s Fruit Salad. Tooth care is another nursery topic, bringing everyday health into activities children can understand.
Family contact extends beyond conversations about learning. FUDGE and GLAM mornings have taken place in nursery, giving relatives opportunities to join in. The school’s pastoral and inclusion team also offers support through telephone calls, virtual appointments and meetings in person. Families can request contact by emailing admin@homerswood.herts.sch.uk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hertfordshire’s county admissions system, following the normal Reception timetable. Nursery applications go directly to the school, so the two routes need to be kept distinct.
Familiarity is a separate benefit. Nursery children have explored the Reception classroom and its outdoor area as preparation for the move. Those visits help introduce the next learning spaces; they do not secure admission.
The stated morning hours are 8:45 to 11:45am, qualified as applying at present alongside an expansion planned for January 2026. Confirm the current session pattern with the school before planning your day around it.
Wraparound care. The school’s breakfast and after-school provision serves Reception to Year 6. Families choosing nursery should therefore plan around nursery hours rather than assume those clubs cover their child.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01707 320610. The school is on Kirklands, Welwyn Garden City, AL8 7RF.
Play and children’s interests shape learning. Examples include growing cress, minibeast hunts, fruit preparation, painting and balancing activities.
