Nursery at Springmead Primary School

Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Older children acting as reading buddies give Springmead’s early years a connection with the wider school. That was part of daily school life in July 2022, offering younger children another person to share books with. The nursery belongs to Springmead Primary School in Hillyfields, Welwyn Garden City.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 6 and 7 July 2022. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together learning to communicate, physical development and social and emotional development with early literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. For parents, that means looking beyond reading and counting to how children express themselves, build relationships and explore ideas.
Springmead’s EYFS themes include Materials, Plants and Seasonal Changes. These give early learning concrete subjects to explore. Cooking and Nutrition also features in the programme, alongside Building, linking practical activity with learning about how things work.
Music includes Big Bear Funk, while Healthy Me and Changing Me feature in life skills. Together, these introduce musical participation and learning about personal development. These are elements of the wider early years curriculum, rather than a fixed nursery session timetable.
Additional needs have a defined route for discussion. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, with the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) joining a meeting when requested. Children receiving SEN support have an additional progress discussion each term. The Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle gives families a way to revisit support and agree the next steps.
Speech and language support includes termly WELCOMM screening, and the school can draw on the EYFS SEND team and speech and language therapists. This provides routes to specialist advice when a child’s communication needs require further attention. A home-school book may support communication where it helps the family.
The school building has one level, two disabled toilets and Soundfield amplification in every classroom. Those are practical considerations for families thinking about mobility or hearing needs. Individual healthcare plans are used for children who need them, and staff receive training to respond to medical conditions.
School meals are prepared on site each day, with a menu rotating over three weeks. This describes the school’s catering arrangements; it does not establish a nursery meal entitlement.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their entry year. Hertfordshire residents apply through Hertfordshire County Council; families living elsewhere use their home authority.
The school’s arrangements for changing year groups include staff handovers and time in the new classroom before the summer term ends. Some children use a social story or a book to help them understand the change. Familiarisation and admission remain separate matters.

Springmead’s school calendar distinguishes term dates, holidays and staff training days. Families should account for those distinctions when planning childcare around the school year.
