At a Glance

Daily stories, quiet reading corners and books to borrow give Templewood’s nursery a clear character: language and listening run through the day. The nursery sits on the school site in Welwyn Garden City, with nature, open space and a Forest School area around it. It offers 26 places, and children can start in the term following their third birthday.

This is school-based early education, with sessions extending to a full day rather than a single morning pattern. Ofsted judged the early years provision Good at the inspection on 13 and 14 December 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.

The Nursery Day

Adult-directed learning sits alongside Learning Through Play (LTP). For nursery children, the early years foundation stage (EYFS) takes practical form through listening, language, stories and exploration. Early reading preparation includes matching, handling books and distinguishing sounds. The emphasis is on the skills that help children become ready to read.

Reading corners provide a quiet place for books and storytelling, while reading materials also extend outside. Children hear stories every day, with adults using expressive voices and gestures. They are encouraged to predict events and invent alternative endings, giving them an active part in the story. Daily rhyme and singing sessions use actions and props; children can also invent songs of their own. These activities give listening and speaking a purpose beyond answering an adult’s questions.

Books travel home through the Lending Library, allowing families to continue sharing stories. Nursery children are also invited to the school library on alternate Friday mornings, connecting the classroom’s book provision with a larger communal space.

Forest School links woodland learning with EYFS objectives. The school aims for children’s interests to shape these sessions, with adults supporting exploration. Its typical session includes a safety discussion at the Friendship Tree and free choice of activities. Boundary Buddies mark woodland edges or areas requiring caution. These routines put exploration within clear limits. In December 2023, children in early years understood their classroom routines, providing another concrete example of how expectations shape the day.

Care and Support

Food arrangements give families a choice: children staying for lunch can bring food from home or have a school meal. Hertfordshire Catering Limited provides meals, with vegetarian and meat choices alongside jacket potatoes. Orders are made through The School Grid, and allergies must be communicated to the caterer. Packed lunches must be nut-free. Fruit and vegetable snacks are provided for early years children, who should bring a water bottle each day.

Before children begin, parents can arrange a meeting with a member of the Senior Leadership Team to discuss additional needs. This gives staff time to prepare support. The SENCo can be contacted at senco@templewood.herts.sch.uk.

Parent consultations for nursery take place in autumn and spring, followed by a summer report. Weekly class updates through Google Classroom give families another way to follow learning between meetings.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hertfordshire County Council. For September 2027 entry, applications run from November 2026 until 15 January 2027, with online applications encouraged. Allocation follows the council’s admissions rules, so choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 9am to noon, with a soft start between 8.40am and 8.55am. The morning session with lunch ends at 1pm; the all-day option finishes at 3pm. Provision reaches up to 30 hours, and working families may qualify for 30 funded hours. Lunch Club and all-day attendance carry charges when children are not eligible for that funding; school meals are charged separately. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery applications go directly to the school, by post or at nurseryadmissions@templewood.herts.sch.uk. Visits can be booked through the office on 01707 324251.

Early years children wear school uniform, with maroon jogging bottoms an option and no PE kit required. Nursery families use the pedestrian gate to the right of the main entrance, and a responsible adult must accompany children for drop-off and collection.
