At a Glance

Construction kits, rhythmic games and a dedicated outdoor area give Holy Family's nursery learning a practical shape. This is the nursery class within The Holy Family Catholic Primary School, on Crookhams in Welwyn Garden City. Its Catholic setting matters: the school identifies acceptance, sharing, honesty, trust and family as its values.

The emphasis is on children exploring for themselves alongside activities led by adults. For parents, that means looking beyond preparation for school to the opportunities children have to make things, move, talk and develop their own ideas.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning with practical experiences. Adults teach skills that children can then use in activities they choose themselves. Construction materials and tools give them opportunities to investigate how things work and practise making safely. Painting, collage and drawing let children explore texture, colour and shape, then talk about their creations.

Movement has a regular place in early years learning. Children use a dedicated outdoor area, take part in daily activities developing small and large movements, and have a PE lesson each week. This gives physical development both everyday practice and a separate teaching slot.

Music combines independent exploration of instruments with activities directed by adults. Singing and games involving rhythm give children ways to listen, respond and express themselves. Early mathematics includes counting, comparing quantities and exploring patterns and shapes, connecting mathematical language to objects children can handle.

Topic work also starts close to home. Nursery history includes events in children's own lives and their families, while geography explores places, habitats and the local area. These are concrete starting points for understanding the wider world.

Care and Support

Settling starts before the first session. Home visits are arranged for children joining Nursery, and induction days allow children and parents to meet the early years team and explore the setting. Those contacts give families opportunities to discuss their child before nursery begins.

For children receiving SEND support, a Child Centred Plan sets out individual support and targets. It is reviewed with families at least three times each year, making parental involvement a recurring part of the process. Teachers work with the SEND coordinator, and communication books or individual communication systems may be used where more frequent contact is needed.

Quiet space is built into the school environment. Every classroom has a calm area, generally a book corner, and the school also has two quiet rooms for interventions. These provide options for children who benefit from reduced stimulation. Medical care plans are prepared and reviewed with parents and relevant staff where needed.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Holy Family's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline.

Transition support is a separate matter. Staff meet internally between year groups at the end of the academic year to pass on information. Children also have opportunities after the summer holidays to see their next classroom before the full return, helping make the change more familiar.

Practical Information

Nursery clothing is straightforward: a plain white polo, a school sweatshirt or cardigan bearing the logo, and navy or black leggings or jogging bottoms. Shoes should be manageable independently. A small bag of spare clothing stays at school, supporting everyday changes and accidents.

General enquiries go to the school office at admin@holyfamily.herts.sch.uk or 01707 375518. The nursery class can also be contacted at nursery@holyfamily.herts.sch.uk.
