At a Glance

Blocks, dressing-up and outdoor exploration give Watchlytes nursery its character: play sits alongside deliberate teaching of language, early writing and number. This is the nursery within Watchlytes Primary School in Welwyn Garden City, with provision for three and four year olds. Children begin school life through a mix of adult guidance and choices of their own.

In the Ofsted report published on 9 December 2025, early years received Strong standard, covering Nursery and Reception together. That is a judgement of the combined early years provision. Skilled conversations with adults and prompt support for individual needs were central strengths, giving parents concrete reasons to look beyond the session timetable.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and personal development together. At Watchlytes, that means building, painting, stories and pretend play alongside focused phonics and maths teaching. Children have time to pursue their interests as well as take part in activities directed by adults. A block construction or dressing-up game gives them something to discuss, test and imagine.

Read Write Inc. supports early reading, while Mastering Number and Master the Curriculum support maths. LetterJoin begins with early letter formation. These named approaches give structure to learning that also happens through play. Nursery children take a picture book from the class library home for an adult to read with them, extending shared stories beyond the classroom.

Outside learning includes Forest School, with exploration of nature and opportunities to practise physical skills. Adults guide children while leaving room for their own discoveries. In December 2025, children across early years developed confident communication, controlled movement and age-appropriate independence. They also sustained attention and coped with setbacks, skills that matter during both learning and play.

Care and Support

Starting school includes a stay-and-play session where teachers spend time with children and talk with parents. Entry forms give families a way to share concerns, and discussions with previous settings help staff understand existing support needs. This puts the child's circumstances into the conversation from the beginning.

Early years staff identified special educational needs and/or disabilities promptly and arranged support quickly in December 2025. They worked closely with families. The school can draw on the SEN Early Years Team, and parents can raise concerns with the class teacher or arrange a SENCo meeting through the office. Learning Support Plans have termly reviews, keeping support linked to the child's progress.

Physical access across the school includes step-free classrooms and an accessible toilet with a hoist and height-adjustable changing table. For lunch, nursery children can bring food from home or have a school meal; an optional lunch club bridges the morning and afternoon sessions.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Herts County Council, while nursery applications go directly to the school office. Keep these as two distinct decisions: choosing the nursery does not settle the next school place.

For children with SEND, annual teacher handovers involve the SENCo, and transition books or videos can help families prepare for a change. These support arrangements concern familiarity and individual needs; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

The 15-hour pattern offers mornings from 8.45am to 11.45am or afternoons from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Optional lunch club runs from 11.45am to 12.30pm and carries a charge, with a separate charge for a school meal.
