Nursery at Hateley Heath Academy

Stories, conversation and growing independence give Hateley Heath’s early years its character. In February 2024, children were becoming more confident at discussing stories and sharing their ideas, with adults making time to listen as well as talk. That gives language development a practical place in the child’s day.
Hateley Heath Academy has a three-year-old nursery on Huntingdon Road in West Bromwich. Alongside it, Hateley Twos provides morning or afternoon provision for eligible two-year-olds. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 27 and 28 February 2024. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Independence and curiosity were strengths of the early years curriculum in February 2024. Children took an interested part in learning, while adults supported their individual interests. For parents, the useful detail is the interaction: children had opportunities to develop communication through conversations with staff, then use that confidence to explain themselves and revisit stories.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) includes practical exploration here. Children experiment with materials for building and construction, and practise handling tools and materials with greater control. These activities give small hands something purposeful to do while children explore how things fit together.
Music adds another way to express ideas and feelings. EYFS children learn nursery rhymes and use music to communicate emotions. The school also aims to develop scientific thinking from EYFS onwards through observation, questions and investigations. Together, these examples show learning that involves making, talking and experimenting, rather than a day defined solely by formal lessons.
Adult attention supports children’s willingness to speak. In February 2024, staff conversations helped early years children become more assured when expressing themselves. Listening matters as much as giving instructions.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school works with specialist agencies when support is needed for children and families. Parents can raise SEND queries through sen@hateleyheath.com. Staff also work with parents and the wider community, giving families a route into discussion about their child’s education.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the local authority where they live, following the normal application timetable. For Sandwell residents, that means Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The three-year-old entitlement is 15 hours each week from the term after a child’s third birthday. Hateley Twos also provides 15 hours weekly for eligible two-year-olds, arranged as mornings or afternoons; families must supply proof of entitlement.
The nursery session times for 2023/24 were 8:30am to 11:30am and 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Those are historical timings, rather than a current childcare schedule.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0121 556 0370 or info@hateleyheath.com. A nursery application requires a copy of the child’s birth certificate. The school advises applying 12 months before the child becomes eligible to start.
