Nursery at Oaklands Primary Academy

At a Glance

Rhymes, stories and dough disco give Oaklands Nursery a practical, language-focused character. Children aged two to four attend the nursery at Oaklands Primary Academy in Biggin Hill, with morning, afternoon and full-day options. The nursery also uses the school field, playground and KS1 hall, giving children experience of the wider school environment during their ordinary activities.

There is a clear caution alongside those features. Ofsted rated early years provision Requires improvement at the inspection on 20 and 21 February 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Children's own choices share the day with activities led by adults. Staff observe their learning and use those observations to plan what comes next. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework: language, movement and relationships sit alongside early reading, maths, creative expression and learning about the world. For parents, this means the curriculum extends beyond preparing children to recognise letters and numbers.

Dough disco and threading provide practice with hand movements; outdoor play supports physical development. Nursery children enjoy songs, rhymes and stories, which February 2024 findings linked to preparation for reading. Classrooms occupy one level, and activities are arranged so children can move independently between them. Spoken instructions are reinforced with visual symbols. Outside, the school playground and field extend the spaces used in the nursery day.

Learning sequence. In February 2024, the order of teaching in early years did not give children a secure progression from basic ideas to harder ones. Teaching and checks on understanding lacked sufficient focus on the knowledge children needed to retain, leaving gaps as they moved forward. Parents should weigh the activities against this concern about what children understand and remember.

Care and Support

Settling starts before the first term. Sessions in the preceding term let children try activities, meet staff and become familiar with the nursery. Parents' information, staff observations and advice from professionals involved with the child help shape the transition plan. Each child has a key worker, giving families a first contact for everyday matters.

Communication includes conversations around sessions, email and arranged appointments, alongside parents' evenings and an end-of-year written report. For additional needs, Assess, Plan, Do, Review means identifying a difficulty, agreeing support, trying it and reviewing its impact. The SENCO works with nursery staff and parents; speech and language screening and therapist-led advice can lead to targeted support. Visual timetables and timers help explain routines. Accessible toilets and changing facilities are provided, although there are internal and external steps between the main entrance and classrooms.

Qualified staff work to EYFS staffing requirements. A hot meal can be bought from the school catering team, with allergies and medical or religious dietary needs accommodated. Lunch supervision can bridge a morning or afternoon session, subject to demand and numbers.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority simply because the child attends. For September 2027 entry, families must make a separate application to Bromley Council by 15 January 2027. Allocation follows the Reception admission criteria.

Transition support is separate from that decision. Children moving to Oaklands Reception join activities in its classroom, and every nursery child receives a social story about their new setting. Staff meet receiving teachers and transfer assessments and other relevant records, including when a child moves to another school.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:30 to 11:30; afternoons from 12:15 to 15:15. The full day runs from 8:30 to 15:15. Funded provision operates Monday to Friday across 38 weeks, with flexible use of hours subject to places. Five mornings or five afternoons are the preferred pattern for 15 hours.

The nursery accepts 15-hour funding for two-year-olds and 15 or 30 hours for three- and four-year-olds, subject to eligibility. Extra hours, lunch supervision and hot meals carry charges; ask the school for current charges. Paid additional hours require a refundable deposit. Written notice of at least half a term applies when leaving or reducing sessions, with funded hours exempt from the notice requirement. Contact nursery@oaklands.cetrust.com for enquiries; nursery application forms go to the school office.
