Nursery at St John's Catholic Specialist School, Boston Spa

An age designation and an actual intake can tell different stories. St John's is designated for ages 3-19, but its March 2026 SEN Information Report recorded its youngest pupils as 11. That distinction matters for parents considering an early years placement: the designation alone should not be treated as a description of a nursery cohort.
The school specialises in communication and language needs, autism, hearing impairment and sensory differences. Pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), which sets out their individual provision. Families of any faith, or none, are welcomed within its Catholic ethos.
Communication shapes the school's learning arrangements. Signing, visual prompts and alternative ways of communicating are used according to individual needs. Predictable routines and adapted resources give pupils different ways to understand instructions and participate. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a description of a nursery session.
Physical adaptations are specific. Classroom sound-field systems amplify speech, while acoustic wall treatments reduce sound reverberation. Teaching rooms are on the ground floor, with ramps or stair lifts addressing changes in level. Outside, a sensory garden is designed for pupils with multisensory impairments; a wheelchair-accessible multisport cage provides another physical resource. These details describe the school site and should be understood in that context.
Specialist support brings together Teachers of the Deaf, an audiologist, speech and language therapists and the school nurse. Licensed Thrive practitioners also contribute to the school's therapeutic team. Support follows the child's assessed needs: occupational therapy and physiotherapy programmes are carried out by trained staff where external therapists have designed or recommended them and the pupil's plan specifies them.
Starting school can involve induction visits and an individual transition plan, with opportunities for families to meet staff. Movement between classes is supported through familiar adults, visual information and consistent routines. The practical aim is to make changes more predictable for the child.
Parents can communicate through telephone, email and home-school systems, alongside formal progress meetings and EHCP reviews. Accessible personal-care facilities include a toilet with a changing table and shower, plus a separate accessible toilet equipped with a hoist.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat the next placement as a separate decision.
Induction visits and personalised transition planning support a child's move into school. They should be understood as preparation for a placement, rather than an admissions advantage.
