Nursery at St Charles Borromeo Catholic Primary School, Weybridge

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Play, independence and Catholic life shape the nursery at St Charles Borromeo. This is the school's own nursery class, serving children aged three to four, rather than a separate childcare setting. It sits within the Catholic primary school on Portmore Way in Weybridge. The school buildings are joined physically to Christ the Prince of Peace Church, giving the faith connection a concrete presence.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Learning takes place inside and outdoors, through exploration, active play and opportunities to think creatively. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together. Its seven areas begin with movement, communication and children's social and emotional development, alongside early reading and writing, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Activities are planned around individual children's needs. For parents, the emphasis is on developing the foundations for learning as well as acquiring knowledge.

Independence is an explicit nursery aim. Children are encouraged to use resources for themselves, learn through direct experience and develop confidence in what they can do. The nursery also aims to build interest in books, physical agility and curiosity about the surrounding world. These aims give play a purpose beyond keeping children occupied.

Little Wandle is the school's phonics scheme. In November 2022, children across early years were learning letter sounds quickly, while adults helped them establish routines, communicate and concentrate. Adults demonstrated expected behaviour and recognised positive conduct, giving children examples to follow.

Catholic teaching has an age-specific element: CAFOD animal mascots are used with nursery children. They give young children a concrete way into ideas about how to treat others and care for the world.

Care and Support

Parental involvement matters to the nursery's approach: it regards parents as children's first educators and aims to work closely with them. For a family choosing this class, that makes participation in learning part of the relationship, rather than simply handing over responsibility for it.

Support for special educational needs and disabilities sits within the school's provision. Depending on a child's needs, help may involve classroom support or intervention individually or in a group. Progress is reviewed regularly. The school's support structure distinguishes Wave 1 provision for everyone, Wave 2 additional help for some children and Wave 3 support tailored more closely to individual needs. Families can contact the SEND coordinator through the school office to discuss this provision.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the relevant deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions; being familiar with the setting does not secure admission.

Practical Information

The school office handles nursery enquiries and requests for paper copies of nursery application documents. Contact info@stcharlesb.surrey.sch.uk or 01932 842617. Office hours are 8.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday during term time, giving families a defined window for telephone contact.

End-of-term arrangements. There is no afternoon nursery on 18 December 2026, when the school term ends at 1.30pm. Families using afternoon provision should plan their childcare around that exception.
