Rhyming games, curiosity-led play and opportunities to swim give Oyster Bay Nursery its own character within Joy Lane Primary Foundation School in Whitstable. The nursery occupies the school site, alongside the Lower School buildings. Provision starts from six months old and serves children of preschool age.
A qualified teacher leads the nursery staff team. This brings a teaching role into the nursery’s organisation, while its position on the school grounds puts early childhood provision within the same site as primary education. Oyster Bay Nursery is inspected separately by Ofsted: the school’s judgement should not be read as a nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. Alongside it sits the Curiosity Approach, which Joy Lane uses in its early years setting. Children’s interests help shape planning, with real objects, natural materials and neutral colours informing the learning environment. The school aims to make children’s learning, rather than distracting decoration, the focus of these spaces.
Voices for Choices begins in Nursery. It uses characters to explain the EYFS Characteristics of Effective Learning, helping children understand different ways of learning through their activities. The approach aims to develop independence and self-regulation; setting goals and checking understanding are part of its sessions.
Early reading starts with sound play. Nursery children encounter phonics through games involving words and rhyme, within the school’s Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised approach. Music also extends into Nursery, and singing is used across classrooms. These are concrete ways for young children to explore language and sound.
Indoor and outdoor spaces both form part of the nursery environment. Swimming adds another dimension: nursery children can swim throughout the year. The school site has an indoor heated pool and a separate training pool designed for younger children, giving this opportunity a specific physical setting.
The nursery says it wants children to feel secure during play, linking that sense of security with wellbeing and growing independence. Its team combines a qualified teacher with nursery staff.
For families supporting communication at home, preschool Listen Up activities include making a pretend shop, sharing stories and taking turns building a tower. These give parents practical ways to join their child’s play while practising listening and conversation.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Kent County Council’s primary admissions system and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Choosing Oyster Bay for the nursery day should therefore remain a separate decision from choosing a Reception school.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 5.30pm, during term time only. Families needing childcare during school holidays should factor that calendar into their arrangements.
