Language, attention and relationships give Sunbeams Nursery its clearest character. At St Alphege Church of England Infant School in Whitstable, early learning combines carefully chosen knowledge with teaching adapted to children's needs. The emphasis is on helping children communicate and engage with learning, giving them skills they can use with adults and other children.
Sunbeams belongs to the infant school. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding following its 4 and 5 June 2024 inspection; that judgement covers Nursery and Reception together, rather than Sunbeams separately. For parents, the nursery-specific strengths within that assessment are the adults' training, their conversations with children and the way learning develops over time.
Learning about the local area begins in Nursery. Trips, music and art contribute to that study, giving children different ways to explore a familiar place. This connects learning to experiences beyond a single activity: children can encounter their surroundings, then explore them creatively.
Adults select the knowledge children need to learn and adjust their teaching to different needs. In June 2024, children in the early years developed language and attention to an exceptional standard. Those skills supported their relationships as well as their learning. Being able to listen, sustain attention and express an idea matters in a shared nursery day.
Conversation is a substantial part of the teaching. Nursery adults were expertly trained, and their exchanges with children supported exceptionally successful learning. The picture is of adults using interaction purposefully, helping children build knowledge through the responses and guidance they receive. Learning accumulates over time. That gives individual activities a place within a longer sequence, rather than leaving them as isolated experiences.
Adaptation is part of the early years teaching: staff shape learning around children's needs. For a family considering support, this matters because the starting point is the individual child and how they can take part in learning.
Relationships also deserve attention. In June 2024, positive connections between children and adults, and between children themselves, began in Nursery. The early years' strong communication skills helped children relate warmly to others. These are practical strengths for children learning to share their day with a group: understanding another person and making themselves understood go together.
Attending Sunbeams Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at St Alphege. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate processes. Families must apply again for Reception through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two decisions. Your child can benefit from their nursery learning while you keep the later application as a separate task.
