Outdoor learning gives Westmeads Outdoor Nursery its identity. It belongs to Westmeads Community Infant School on Cromwell Road in Whitstable, placing the nursery within an infant school rather than a separate childcare setting. The school describes curiosity and independence as guiding values, alongside kindness, perseverance and equity.
In January 2025, Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers the school's early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Independence is a stated aim of the early years approach. Westmeads describes learning informed by research, with an emphasis on children developing an appetite for learning. Its early years activities include programming robots to follow a route across a map and using instant cameras to capture learning. These give children practical reasons to explore technology: directing a journey or recording something they have done.
An interactive whiteboard is also accessible for practising maths and phonics in the early years. Learning about people starts close to home, with children considering themselves and comparing families, communities and traditions. This connects exploration of differences to experiences young children can recognise. These are early years examples, rather than a fixed nursery session timetable.
Families have a role in the early years approach. Westmeads invites parents into school daily and describes working alongside them as their child's first educator. That creates an opportunity to connect learning at school with family knowledge of the child.
Across Westmeads, teachers meet the SENDCo at regular points to review progress and arrange individual or small group help. Support can draw on advice from speech and language therapists, educational psychologists and the Specialist Teaching and Learning Team. Families are involved in planning support, reviewing targets and discussing ways to help at home, giving parents a part in decisions about their child's learning.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal Kent County Council process and meet its deadline. Attendance at the nursery does not confer priority under Westmeads' admission criteria.
Allocation rests with the local authority. Priority categories cover children in care or previously in care, qualifying sibling connections, medical or access needs, and proximity to school. Siblings must attend the school concurrently to qualify. For families, the practical distinction is clear: choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Nursery enquiries can go to the school office on 01227 272 995 or office@westmeads.kent.sch.uk. Tours for families considering September 2027 entry include 20 October, 18 November and 7 December 2026, followed by 7 January 2027. They begin at 09:15 and take about 45 minutes; telephone the office to reserve a place. Alternative appointments can also be arranged by calling.
Training days need a place in family planning. Westmeads closes to children on INSET days, so those dates affect childcare arrangements as well as the school calendar.
