Waterproofs and wellington boots are everyday essentials for Saplings, Runwell Community Primary School’s 24-place outdoor nursery. Children can join from their third birthday. This is provision for families who want outdoor learning to be a substantial part of nursery life, with clothing chosen for the weather rather than a separate PE kit.
Saplings sits within the primary school at Canewdon Gardens, Wickford. In the Ofsted inspection of 10 and 11 December 2024, early years provision was judged Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Outdoor learning shapes the day. Children spend plenty of time outside, and the nursery recommends waterproof jackets and dungarees that allow layers to change with the weather. Inside, children wear black plimsolls; outdoors, trainers and wellington boots are part of the kit. The practical implication is clear: dress for active learning in changing conditions.
Development Matters guides the nursery’s progression of skills. The early years foundation stage, or EYFS, includes the beginnings of writing: in December 2024, children undertook repeated mark-making practice and developed accurate letter formation. These are concrete foundations for later learning.
For families, the December 2024 early-years findings offer reassurance about learning support: staff helped children make progress and prepare for their next step. Children quickly understood routines and expectations, giving them a framework for positive participation. The picture is of outdoor provision alongside purposeful adult support, rather than outdoor time alone.
A nursery manager and nursery support staff form the nursery team. For the first days and weeks, children may bring a familiar comfort object, such as a teddy. That gives families a small, practical way to maintain continuity while their child adjusts to nursery.
Class Dojo provides learning updates and a secure channel for messages between families and teaching staff. Additional support sits within the school’s inclusion structure, with a SENDCo, a learning mentor and learning support assistants. Assistants provide classroom help or individual support when required.
Food brought into school must follow its nut restrictions: products with nuts as ingredients are excluded, while products carrying precautionary warnings about possible traces are allowed. Check packaging carefully when preparing lunch or treats. Families also need to provide a named water bottle for nursery.
Attending Saplings does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Essex County Council’s Planning and Admissions Department, preferably online, within the normal Reception application window.
Nursery attendance confers a specific, conditional priority: children must attend Runwell’s nursery and receive pupil premium funding, and a supplementary information form is required. This category follows children living in the priority admission area, including the earlier sibling category. Within an oversubscription category, nearer homes take precedence using straight-line distance. Nursery attendance alone therefore does not give every child priority.
Preparation for starting school is a separate matter. Summer-term induction includes information for parents and time for children with Runwell staff; Reception staff also make home visits at the beginning of the autumn term. These activities support familiarity with the next stage, but do not replace the application process.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am, with afternoons from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. An optional lunchtime club can extend a session or link provision for full-day care. Where vacancies permit, children may start after their third birthday; September, January and April are common starting points.
Families using Free Early Education Entitlement funding are asked to book complete morning or afternoon sessions and keep that funding with Runwell rather than divide it between providers. Privately funded additional provision is also offered for children attending for 30 hours. Nursery payments go directly to the school’s bank account using the details on invoices.
Uniform combines a royal blue T-shirt with dark grey or black pull-up jogging bottoms or leggings. Nursery-logo clothing is also available. Sandals are excluded, and children need weather-appropriate outdoor clothing.
For nursery enquiries, telephone 01268 735329 or email admin@runwell.essex.sch.uk. School visits can be arranged, giving families an opportunity to discuss Saplings before applying.
