Rain does not stop play in Duckling, Beech Hill’s nursery class. Children head outside in wet weather, and spare clothes are encouraged for messy exploration. That gives families a useful picture of the provision’s character: play involves getting stuck in.
Based at Beech Hill Community Primary School on Netherby Road in Wigan, the nursery admits children in September following their third birthday. It belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage department. Ofsted graded early years provision Good following its inspection on 4 and 5 October 2022; this was an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Play shapes the timetable. The early years department uses free flow play rather than scheduled play breaks, with learning planned around both children’s choices and activities led by adults. Children therefore have opportunities to pursue their own interests as well as join adult-led learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects talking and listening, movement and social development with early literacy, number work, creative expression and discovering how the world works. These are linked areas of learning rather than a nursery timetable of separate school subjects. Duckling’s focus-rhyme links include I’m a little Penguin and 5 little Snowmen with Makaton, giving families specific songs to revisit together.
In October 2022, nursery children enjoyed extending their vocabulary and exploring the letter sounds in their own names. Early years children also listened attentively to adults and behaved well, helping learning stay orderly. These findings give a concrete picture of language learning and group routines at that time.
Duckling staff work alongside the wider Early Years Team. For families, communication includes nursery photographs, learning updates and event reminders through Class Dojo’s Class Story, alongside the school’s weekly newsletter. Enable notifications to receive those updates. Class Dojo messages are not monitored, so concerns should be raised directly with staff.
Food arrangements distinguish shorter sessions from a full day. Snacks and milk are free during the day; children attending all day can have a school dinner for an additional charge. Meals are cooked on site using fresh ingredients, and special diets are catered for. This makes dietary requirements a practical part of planning your child’s meals.
The school works with parents and outside professionals on support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Families can contact the SENCO through the school office. Child protection training applies to all school staff, with concerns referred to the designated safeguarding officer.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal council admissions process and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Beech Hill’s admissions page directs families to Wigan Council’s primary admissions route. Treat choosing Duckling and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. The full day begins at 8:45am and ends at 3:15pm. Beech Hill accepts funded places covering 15 or 30 hours, with additional morning or afternoon sessions available for a charge. Contact the Early Years Phase Leader about vacancies and the school for current charges.
Bring a coat and consider leaving spare shoes, socks and clothing in nursery. School uniform includes a white polo shirt and light blue sweatshirt or cardigan; second-hand uniform can be obtained through the office. Family Breakfast welcomes relatives as well as children to the school hall from 8:15am to 8:45am each weekday, with cereals and bagels before school.
