At a Glance

A playground boat, a twisting cycle roadway and a mud kitchen give Chapel End Nursery plenty of scope for imaginative play. This is a purpose-built nursery class within Billinge Chapel End Primary School’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) unit, with a teacher leading each session and a Level 3 Learning Assistant providing support.

Nursery children share the early years building and learning spaces with Reception children, while teaching groups are separated by year group. Each child has a named teacher. That combination gives nursery children access to shared resources alongside teaching organised for their own group.

The Nursery Day

Play shapes the learning here. The EYFS brings together communication, physical skills, relationships, early literacy and maths, understanding the world, and creative expression. Children choose activities themselves, with adults helping them develop their ideas; group teaching adds stories, singing, phonics and mathematical activities. Nursery phonics focuses on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds, developing listening and awareness of sounds before learning to read.

Inside, the materials invite children to experiment. Funnels and pipes make water play a chance to investigate filling and pouring. The domestic role-play area supports storytelling and taking turns, while puppets accompany books in the reading area. Construction resources include mobilo, magnetics and wooden blocks, giving children different ways to join pieces and build models. In the workshop, glue, scissors and hole punches put making into children’s own hands. Play dough and tools in the malleable area give children opportunities to work on small hand movements through sensory play. Painting materials let them combine different media in their artwork. Children also discuss their choices when building or making models, then consider changes: creating something includes thinking about how to adapt it.

Outdoor areas are accessible each day. Children can ride scooters, trikes and bikes along a roadway with bends and a slight hill, or practise balancing on climbing equipment incorporating tyres and steps. A large sandpit expands building play; the digging area and neighbouring mud kitchen offer another way to explore materials. Large wooden bricks and builders’ tools allow construction on a bigger scale. Indoor and outdoor play are part of the same learning day.

Care and Support

Snack breaks bring children together in small groups, with an adult joining them for food, drinks and conversation in both the morning and afternoon. Eating is a social activity as well as a care routine. At lunch, children practise using cutlery; those attending the funded full-day pattern can bring a packed lunch or have a school meal for an additional charge.

Everyday independence also gets attention. Families are encouraged to practise coats, managing clothes for the toilet and washing hands, with nursery adults offering toileting support. This gives parents concrete routines to practise at home. For a child with special educational needs or a disability, the school’s designated SEN coordinator provides a contact for discussion.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Chapel End Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline.

The shared EYFS building offers practical continuity: nursery children already use the learning environment alongside Reception children. Familiarity with those spaces is useful when moving on, but it does not determine admission.

Practical Information

The 15-hour offer runs across five sessions, Monday to Friday. Morning provision is for preschool children; January and April starters attend afternoons. Eligible children using 30-hour funding can attend from 8.45am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, or arrange two or three longer days incorporating care before or after school between 7.30am and 5.30pm. Flexible days must be agreed in advance.

Breakfast Club and After School club also take nursery-age children, subject to availability. Discuss session arrangements with the EYFS leader through the school office on 01744 678230 or email chapelend@sthelens.org.uk. The office handles wraparound availability enquiries; ask the school for current charges and terms.
