At a Glance

School life starts small here, with nursery children joining a mixed Early Years class alongside Reception children. Dalton St Michael's Church of England Primary School has an on-site nursery run by its governors. It welcomes children after their third birthday, making this a school-based option from age three.

The early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 8 and 9 March 2023. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Books and familiar routines give the early years day its shape. In March 2023, adults selected stories to engage children's imagination and interests, while older pupils helped younger children learn playground games with equipment. These are useful everyday connections: stories invite children into conversation, and games give them ways to join in with others.

Nursery activities in autumn 2019 show how practical the learning has been. Water play involved buckets, tubes, trays and pipes, with children experimenting with routes for objects. Outdoors, they planted winter flowers in the school yard and gathered apples and damsons for crumble. This brought exploration, gardening and food preparation into their learning.

Inside, a bear cave provided space for stories and play. Children made self-portraits with mirrors and created woodland animal habitats in a tuff tray. These examples show learning through making, observing and talking, rather than simply completing tasks. They belong to that earlier nursery cohort.

Care and Support

Settling starts with routines. In March 2023, routines introduced early helped children become comfortable quickly. The autumn 2019 nursery activities also included personal shoe boxes containing children's interests and favourite things, alongside stories about families and feelings. That gave adults and children concrete starting points for getting to know one another.

Support has a defined team structure. The assistant headteacher also holds the SENCO and deputy safeguarding lead roles. Staff receive child protection training, and their first-aid qualifications cover paediatric, emergency and school first aid. Families therefore have established roles through which to raise care or additional-needs concerns.

School dinners are chargeable for nursery children, who do not qualify for universal free school meals. Meals need to be included when families consider the practical cost of attendance.

Moving On to Reception

Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Lancashire County Council's website. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle is now past.

Sharing an Early Years class with Reception children provides everyday familiarity with the next age group. Treat that classroom connection separately from the application process: familiarity does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Children generally receive government funding from the term after they turn three. Paid sessions allow a start immediately after the third birthday. For children eligible for 30 hours of extended childcare, attendance can run from 9am to 3pm each day.

Breakfast Club and Afterschool Club can be purchased for nursery children. The school office handles nursery enquiries and visit appointments; call 01257 462082 to arrange a visit. Contact the school for current charges before choosing the sessions and extra care your family needs.
