Nursery at Hindley Nursery School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Familiar stories, communication support and outdoor independence give Hindley its character. This maintained nursery school on Mornington Road in Wigan provides early education for children aged two, three and four. Nursery education is the school's purpose, rather than an addition to a primary school.
Leadership includes a qualified headteacher, a qualified teacher and a Pastoral and School Lead. Teaching assistants and pastoral staff also form part of the team. That structure combines classroom teaching with support for children and families.
Language runs through the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes the curriculum: children develop communication, movement, relationships and early understanding of numbers and the world through planned experiences and play. Activities respond to the interests and needs of the children attending.
Core Books include Whatever Next! and Owl Babies. Children return to familiar stories, join in with repeated passages and use them as starting points for activities. Core Rhymes include Hickory Dickory Dock and Five Little Speckled Frogs. Repetition gives children familiar words to practise and stories they can retell. In its inspection on 31 March 2023, Ofsted found that children enthusiastically joined in with stories and carried them into their play.
Movement between indoor and outdoor activities is part of daily provision. Waterproof clothing and wellington boots are supplied, making outdoor play possible in different weather. Physical activities develop whole-body strength alongside more precise hand movements. Mathematics includes sorting, comparing shapes and recognising patterns, with problems linked to children's other learning rather than confined to an isolated activity.
The Learning to Learn classroom supports children with emerging or identified additional needs. Picture timetables and choice boards help explain activities and routines; Signalong adds signs to spoken language. These give children different ways to understand the session and communicate their choices.
Settling begins before the first nursery session. Inspire sessions and stay and play let practitioners meet children and discuss parents' questions. Some children receive a home visit where staff consider it necessary. A key worker is the family's first contact once their child starts, with opportunities for everyday conversations at collection and drop-off.
Evidence Me provides termly reports and lets parents share learning from home. Parent evenings take place in autumn and spring. For children with SEND, support plans and the Small Steps Tracker inform termly reviews with parents, so discussions connect to specific next steps.
The building has wheelchair access, a lift between floors, and toilet and changing facilities adapted for accessibility. Prescribed medicines can be administered when needed; children with particular medical needs have a Health Care Plan. These arrangements matter for families whose child's care requires planning alongside learning.
Lunch Club requires a packed lunch from home. In March 2023, safeguarding was judged effective, with staff trained to recognise concerns and children taught to consider risks during outdoor play.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Hindley's nursery application form explicitly warns against assuming that a nursery place automatically secures primary or infant school admission.
Transition support is a separate matter. Practitioners meet Reception teachers for all children, and children visit their receiving primary school during the summer term. For children with additional needs, individual meetings with the receiving school take place after allocation, and relevant assessments and reports are passed on. The aim is continuity of support, rather than an admissions advantage.
Provision operates in term time. Standard morning sessions run from 9am to noon, afternoons from 12.45pm to 3.45pm, and the 30 Hour Sessions pattern from 9am to 3pm, subject to eligibility. Learning to Learn has a different afternoon pattern, noon to 3pm. Families should match the appropriate session to their collection arrangements.
The school offers funded 15-hour and eligible 30-hour patterns. Its entitlement information gives children aged three and four 15 hours from the term following their third birthday; two-year-old funding depends on eligibility. Lunch Club, a late finish and additional sessions are charged extras, with additional sessions subject to availability. Ask the school for current charges.
Uniform is optional. Clothes and shoes should be labelled and allow comfortable, independent play; children need a coat. To join the waiting list, visit or telephone for an application form, or download one. Enquiries use the Borsdane Avenue entrance, telephone 01942 488228 or email enquiries@hindleysurestart.co.uk. Informal visits and short tours are offered.
