Nursery at Ince CofE Primary School

Three-hour sessions or a day spanning both: Ince's nursery gives families a choice of morning, afternoon and full-day attendance within a Church of England primary school. Children can start in the term after turning three. The provision sits within the school's early years, on Charles Street in Ince, Wigan.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 12 and 13 September 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Christian identity also shapes the setting: the nursery and primary school share a vision grounded in Matthew 5:14-16, with growing and learning together central to it.
A morning session runs from 9am until noon; the afternoon runs from noon until 3pm. For children attending both, lunch divides the day at noon.
The nursery classroom has its own door, but the school office also serves as a handover point for children attending one session. Morning children leave through the office, while afternoon children start there. These arrangements make the session pattern relevant to the child's daily routine as well as the family's timetable.
Settling into school routines is an evidenced strength. In September 2023, children in early years adjusted promptly from the start and became familiar with those routines. The nursery team includes teachers, an Early Years Lead and teaching assistants.
For additional learning needs, the school's SEND approach moves from adapted classroom teaching to targeted help and, where needed, more intensive individual provision or specialist advice. Parents can raise concerns with their child's teacher or the SENDCO. This gives families a clear starting point for discussing support.
Local Kitchen supplies school meals, ordered and paid for beforehand through Evolve Hub. Children may bring a healthy packed lunch in a labelled bag or container. The school prohibits nut-containing food, including snacks and packed lunches, because children on site have severe nut allergies. Families should share dietary needs, allergies and medication information before their child starts, and keep those details current.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are distinct decisions; a nursery place should not be treated as securing the next stage.
Although the morning session starts at 9am, the classroom opens for drop-off at 8:45am. Afternoon learning ends at 3pm, with dismissal at 3:15pm. Full-day children use the nursery door for both handovers; morning-only children are collected at the office, and afternoon-only children are dropped off there.
An adult must collect nursery children. Tell the teacher or office when someone unfamiliar will collect: a password system supports these handovers. Charles Street and Pickup Street become pedestrian-only between 8:30am and 9am, then between 3pm and 3:30pm, so allow for this when planning travel.
