Three-hour sessions or a full day: Parklee’s nursery gives families a choice of attendance patterns within a primary school in Atherton. A nursery class teacher leads the provision. Government-funded hours and an extended day for full-day children add practical flexibility to that school-based arrangement.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), bringing together early learning and children’s personal development. Its seven areas cover communication, physical development and personal, social and emotional development, alongside mathematics, literacy, expressive arts and understanding the world. For parents, that means the curriculum reaches beyond early reading and numbers to include movement, relationships and creative expression.
Daily Supported Reading is a named approach across the early years, combining phonics with structured reading materials. Teachers work with individuals, groups and whole classes, giving learning several formats rather than a single classroom pattern. Outdoor surroundings and the local community are also used as opportunities for active learning across the school.
Messy activities are part of early-years life here. A labelled bag of spare clothes can stay in class, making a change of clothing possible when an activity calls for it. Families are also encouraged to join early-years stay-and-play activities, offering a way to take part in their child’s learning.
All early-years staff have paediatric first-aid training. For children with medical needs, the school’s Learning Mentor prepares a Health Care Plan with external agencies, and staff are briefed about the child’s needs. These arrangements make individual care requirements part of the information shared with the team.
Additional support follows the school’s SEND arrangements. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, with the SENDCo involved in deciding next steps. Support is personalised, and a passport plan records targets, interventions and what helps the child; parents contribute to its preparation. That gives families a role in shaping support, as well as hearing about it.
Accessibility has concrete provision behind it: the school has two accessible toilets and a hygiene room with a shower. The EMTAS team can provide interpreters for induction visits and meetings, while letters can be translated when needed. These are school-wide arrangements relevant to families discussing their child’s needs.
Full-day nursery children eat lunch at school, choosing between a purchased hot dinner and a packed lunch from home. A snack is provided each day, with a daily donation requested. Contact the school for current meal charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Parklee directs primary admission applications to Wigan’s local authority service and Citizen Portal.
Transition support is a separate matter. Before Reception starts, children and parents can attend activity sessions, and the school exchanges information with preschool providers through transition meetings. These arrangements support preparation for the next stage; they do not secure admission.
Morning sessions run from 09:00 to 12:00, afternoons from 12:00 to 15:00, and full days from 09:00 to 15:00. Children attending full days can use an extended arrangement from 08:40 to 15:10 for an additional charge. The distinction matters when matching nursery attendance to work or collection plans.
Both 15 and 30 government-funded hours are offered. Families using 15 funded hours can purchase additional hours. Nursery applications are handled by the school, with forms obtainable from the office and a birth certificate required when submitting an application.
Uniform is encouraged in nursery but optional. Clothing should be labelled, and children need a coat or cagoule suited to the weather. For enquiries, email enquiries@parklee-ept.com or telephone 01942 874203; a contact form is also available.
