Nursery at R L Hughes Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Books, music and early mathematical experiences give R L Hughes Primary School's nursery its clearest character. This is the school's own nursery provision on Mayfield Street in Ashton-in-Makerfield, rather than a separate childcare provider. For families, the emphasis is on the beginnings of learning within a primary school community.

A rebuilding project is also part of the setting's current context. Work has begun and is scheduled to continue through 2027. The proposed replacement is a single-storey building, with changes to landscaping and additional parking for cars and cycles. These are plans for the school site, rather than facilities to treat as already completed.

The Nursery Day

Regular stories are a concrete part of early learning here. At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted identified frequent adult reading in the early years as supporting children's language. Listening to books gives children opportunities to encounter words and ideas before they can read independently. The reading page also includes recommendations specifically for nursery-age children, giving parents a starting point for choosing books together at home.

Music has a defined place in the early years foundation stage (EYFS), the early learning phase. A half-hour class lesson takes place each week. That gives music a regular slot alongside other learning, rather than leaving it solely to occasional events.

Mathematics begins with varied experiences in EYFS, forming the starting point for the school's mastery approach. The approach emphasises understanding mathematical ideas rather than simply repeating procedures. History planning also explicitly starts in the early years, with questions about the past and comparisons with the present forming part of the wider curriculum.

Care and Support

Cooperation is part of the early-years picture. Ofsted's February 2023 account describes children learning together and joining in everyday routines such as tidying up. Those small routines matter: learning alongside others includes taking responsibility for shared activities.

Meals are ordered through Evolve. Local Kitchen employs the kitchen team and determines the menus, so families have a named ordering system and catering organisation. Contact the school for current meal charges.

For additional needs, the school's SENCO can be contacted at sendco@rlhughes.org.uk; the inbox is checked on Mondays. The school also directs families to Wigan Local Offer and the Autism Pathway and Service. These provide routes to discuss support beyond the nursery classroom. Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the school's designated lead or deputy leads through the office.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. The school's admissions page directs school applications to Wigan Council. Treat that application as a separate step from enrolling in nursery.

Practical Information

To apply for nursery, return the nursery application form to the school office with a copy of your child's birth certificate. This is a different route from the council application for school entry.

For enquiries about attending, contact enquiries@admin.rlhughes.wigan.sch.uk or telephone 01942 701147. The school calendar gives autumn half-term as 26 to 30 October 2026, with the term ending on 18 December 2026. These dates help families plan around the school calendar.
