Brick building, pretend play in the home corner and a den-making experience give St Wilfrid's nursery a practical, playful character. This is the Nursery class within Standish St Wilfrid's Church of England Primary Academy on Rectory Lane in Standish, Wigan. Children begin school life through shared play and familiar routines.
Ofsted's March 2026 inspection assessed early years at Expected standard. That judgement covers the school's early years provision. Children were comfortable, safe and able to play together, with nursery staff helping routines become familiar quickly. The school describes Christian faith as shaping its culture, giving families a clear sense of the values surrounding nursery life.
Communication is a clear thread through the day. Adults help children broaden their vocabulary and practise talking with others, including learning to wait for a turn. The Early Years Foundation Stage here brings together language, movement and early mathematical learning: children return to important ideas rather than encounter them only once.
Play gives those ideas a practical setting. Climbing provides physical challenge, bricks invite construction, and the home corner makes room for pretend scenarios. Adult interaction adds conversation and turn-taking to these activities. Children also develop independence, consider risks and learn about healthy decisions, connecting learning with things they can do for themselves.
Books are shared each day across early years, and staff support the beginnings of reading. The school links early-years themes with Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design, using reading texts to connect stories with exploration and creativity. A den-making experience is part of the nursery programme, adding another specific opportunity for practical activity.
Early writing. In March 2026, work to strengthen writing was still beginning. Staff needed further training and regularly planned chances for children to practise writing throughout early years. For families, this is the development priority alongside the established emphasis on communication and reading.
Support starts with what each child can already do. Staff adjust learning for children facing difficulties, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). This makes individual starting points relevant to everyday activities, rather than expecting every child to approach them in the same way.
Parents and carers exchange learning information with staff across early years, providing a connection between home and the classroom. The school's SENCO can be contacted through the office, giving families a direct route for discussing additional needs. Within nursery, adults help children share play and take turns, so social learning is part of care as well as teaching.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Applications can be made through Wigan's online school admissions service. Treat that application as a separate task when planning your child's next step.
