At a Glance

Three-hour sessions and a key person system give this nursery its practical shape: a school-based start for children aged three to four, with a nursery teacher and teaching assistant. Wigan Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School’s nursery sits within its early years team on Clifton Street in Worsley Mesnes.

Relationships have a defined place in the provision. The key person system links children with adults in the nursery, while confidence, independence and learning to play alongside others are explicit priorities. For families choosing a first school experience, those are useful foundations for the day.

The Nursery Day

Morning nursery runs from 8:45am to 11:45am for children taking the 15-hour pattern. The afternoon equivalent starts at 12:15pm and finishes at 3:15pm. Children on the 30-hour pattern have lunch at 11:30am, making the meal a distinct part of their school day.

Personal, social and emotional development is part of the early years approach: children practise working in groups, sharing and taking turns. Everyday situations, such as helping an upset child, become opportunities to learn about kindness. Cultural and religious events are introduced through experiences intended to make sense to young children. These are concrete ways of teaching children how to be together.

Reading also has a clear place. At the April 2023 Ofsted inspection, early years children listened closely to stories and rhymes, and teaching of letters and sounds was consistent. That gives families a specific picture of the language experiences within early years, rather than an academic promise about later results.

Care and Support

A key person provides a relationship around which a child can build familiarity with nursery adults. Alongside the nursery teacher and teaching assistant, the school’s support structure includes an EYFS SENDCO and a pastoral manager who also serves as assistant SENDCO. Families with additional needs therefore have identifiable roles to approach.

Lunch arrangements connect to the school’s meal service: orders go through Live Kitchen, with Dolce providing the menu. Wraparound care includes breakfast choices such as bagels and fruit, and afternoon snacks such as pasta or sandwiches. Special dietary requirements are catered for in the clubs, which matters when extending the nursery day.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; the school directs applicants to Wigan Council’s online route. Treat this as a separate decision and application, rather than an automatic next step from nursery.

Practical Information

Breakfast Club runs from 7:30am to 8:45am; After School Club operates from 3:20pm until 5:30pm. Both are booked and paid for using the School Gateway App. These are charged sessions, so include them when planning the practical shape of childcare.

Nursery uniform combines a white polo shirt with a royal blue cardigan or round-neck jumper, grey bottoms and black shoes. The polo and knitwear may be plain or carry the school logo, giving families a choice when buying them.

Collection changes should go to the class teacher, either directly, through Class Dojo or through the office. Playground gates open at 3:10pm before nursery’s afternoon finish. For enquiries, telephone 01942 776457 or email enquiries@admin.worsleymesnes.wigan.sch.uk. The office also arranges school visits, giving parents a direct way to look around.
