At the May 2024 inspection, outdoor play and more structured learning sat side by side in the nursery at All Saints Church of England Primary School in Wigston. That balance gave the provision its character: children learned through play, with planned teaching also helping them prepare for the next stage of school.
Preschool welcomes children from the age of three within this Church of England primary school on Long Street. In the inspection on 8 and 9 May 2024, early years provision was judged Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery's mix of classroom learning and outdoor activity was a specific strength at that time.
Play has a clear educational purpose here. In May 2024, children benefited from deliberately planned activities and enjoyed learning both indoors and in outdoor areas designed to support their learning. More structured teaching also helped them get ready for their next stage. For parents, the useful distinction is the combination: opportunities to explore alongside sessions with a more directed focus.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach includes investigating, observing and learning through play. Early geography starts with children's immediate surroundings, introducing ideas about the natural world, cultures, people and places through direct experiences. This gives young children familiar starting points for understanding the wider world.
Mathematics focuses on number sense in EYFS. History begins with stories and role play, including learning about people who help others and comparing past and present through children's own experiences. Early ideas about technology safety are introduced through personal, social and health education. These activities introduce early ideas that children will build on in later learning.
Families can contact the school office about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The school aims to keep families' and children's views central to its SEND work and reviews its policy annually. That gives parents a route into discussions about support and a place in the review of how that support works.
Food rules matter across the school site. All Saints is nut-free, and packed lunches must exclude foods containing nuts. Drinking bottles should be unbreakable, labelled with the child's name and contain water only. These are practical preparations families can make before their child starts.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Leicestershire County Council's admissions service. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
For the September 2026 Reception intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. The structured learning described in May 2024 helped children prepare for their next stage educationally; that preparation does not secure an admission offer.
The school office handles enquiries on 0116 288 0013 or at office@aps.learnat.uk. Prospective families are welcome to arrange a school visit through the office. The address is Long Street, Wigston, LE18 2AH.
For families combining the school journey with walking a pet, dogs cannot accompany them onto the grounds, including the adjoining playing field, or be left tied unattended to surrounding railings or fences. Guide and service dogs can be accommodated through agreed arrangements.
