Stories, repeated phrases and animal sounds give Fairfield’s nursery a clear character: early language grows through participation. This is the preschool provision attached to Fairfield Community Primary School in South Wigston, on Cheshire Drive. It sits within the school’s early years provision, which received the Expected standard judgement in the January 2026 Ofsted inspection.
Conversation carries real weight here. Adults introduce vocabulary and encourage children to try new words while playing and talking. For a young child, that connects learning words with using them to express an idea. Nursery children also engage with stories, listening closely and contributing familiar phrases and animal noises. Books invite participation rather than simply quiet listening.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum builds knowledge and skills in a planned sequence. In parent terms, learning develops step by step, with communication, early literacy and mathematics among Fairfield’s priorities. The school aims to combine teaching basic skills with opportunities to revisit learning and follow children’s interests. That gives children both direction and room to pursue what catches their attention.
Fairfield also aims to support learning through indoor and outdoor environments. Its ambition is for children to become increasingly independent and learn alongside one another. In January 2026, established early years routines helped children take more responsibility for themselves and supported purposeful activity. The emphasis is on learning how to participate as well as what to learn.
Warm relationships support the daily experience. In January 2026, early years children were comfortable with staff, happy and secure; familiar routines helped them settle into learning. Adults worked with families to respond to children’s needs, including difficulties affecting learning or wellbeing. For parents, that makes the relationship with staff part of their child’s support, rather than an occasional conversation about progress.
Additional needs are supported within a wider school structure. The SENDCo oversees teaching assistants who provide individual or group support according to need. Fairfield works with speech and language services, autism outreach, and specialists in hearing and sight impairment to shape support. Parents can take part in regular meetings to discuss updates, giving families a role in reviewing their child’s needs.
Early years teaching also includes extra practice for children who need help with early reading. In January 2026, these children were recognised promptly and received focused support. Help is therefore linked to the learning a child needs to consolidate.
Attending Fairfield’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Leicestershire County Council, which manages allocations rather than the school.
For the intake starting in August 2026, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Treat the move into Reception as a separate application task, even when your child already attends the nursery. Familiarity with the school and an admission decision are separate matters.
The school office handles enquiries and can be contacted on 0116 278 2424. Preschool tours provide a way to meet the provision before making a choice. Fairfield is on Cheshire Drive, South Wigston, LE18 4WA, giving families a concrete location to consider alongside their daily travel arrangements.
For support with special educational needs or disabilities, contact the SENDCo through the school office. This provides a direct route to discuss a child’s needs with the team responsible for coordinating support.
