Play, outdoor exploration and quieter places to pause shape South Wonston School Nursery. It forms part of South Wonston Primary School, with its own nursery lead and a team trained in early childhood development, first aid and safeguarding. The nursery aims to build confidence and independence through a combination of play and structured learning.
Family partnership is part of that approach. The nursery places importance on working with parents to support children’s learning and emotional development, rather than treating the nursery day as something separate from home.
Children have opportunities to choose their own exploration alongside activities directed by adults. Daily experiences include sensory play, movement with music, creative work and time outdoors, as well as learning together in groups. That gives the day several different ways for children to participate: making, moving, listening and investigating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework. In parent language, this means learning extends beyond early reading and numbers to communication, physical skills, relationships and understanding the world. Stories and listening support language; mark-making introduces literacy; early number activities develop mathematical thinking. Creative play and imaginative storytelling give children ways to express ideas before they can write them down.
Social learning has an explicit place, with confidence, independence and interaction with other children among the curriculum’s aims. Physical development includes coordination and fine motor skills, while exploration of nature, technology and the community connects learning to children’s surroundings.
Classrooms provide space for exploration and creative activities. A dedicated outdoor play area supports movement and learning about nature, giving outdoor activity a place within the nursery provision itself. Quiet areas offer somewhere for rest or a calmer pause. These are distinct parts of the environment, with space both to be active and to step back.
Settling begins with a gentle transition intended to help children feel comfortable. The nursery emphasises partnership with families and offers opportunities for parents to discuss learning and development. That makes the relationship with adults part of starting nursery, alongside getting used to the activities and surroundings.
Emotional learning also has a named programme: myHappymind is used from nursery onwards. Its purpose is to help children understand feelings and practise managing them. This complements the nursery curriculum’s focus on social confidence and independence, giving emotional development a place alongside language, movement and creative play.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions process, which Hampshire County Council administers.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Nursery attendance and a school application should therefore be treated as separate decisions when planning a child’s next step.
Nursery tours can be booked to meet the team and explore the setting. Applications can be completed online, or families can request a paper form from the school office; places depend on availability and the nursery’s admissions policy.
