Numbers to handle, pictures to compare and ideas to explain: practical mathematics gives Alexander First School’s nursery a distinctive starting point. Its Teaching for Mastery approach puts understanding ahead of simply recognising written numbers. Children work with different representations of an amount, giving them several ways to explore what a number means.
The nursery belongs to Alexander First School in Oakley Green, Windsor. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 7 and 8 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) mathematics approach combines practising number skills with explaining ideas. Teaching for Mastery breaks learning into small steps, with new concepts secured before children move forward. For parents, the distinction is practical: counting aloud is only part of the task. Children also explore how objects, pictures and written numbers relate to one another.
Matching games encourage children to identify quantities in different forms, with number activities using both indoor and outdoor areas. Counting involves touching individual objects and understanding that the last number gives the total. Moving those objects into a new arrangement should not change how many there are. Counters and a tens frame provide a practical way to explore that idea.
Reasoning starts early, too. Nursery examples include identifying a muddled number sequence, considering whether a mathematical statement is correct and explaining an answer. This makes conversation part of mathematics rather than leaving children to supply a number alone. In March 2023, purposeful exchanges with adults, beginning in early years, helped children develop vocabulary and describe their thinking.
Communication runs through Class Dojo, the school’s channel for staff messages and home learning tasks. Parents are asked to download the app when joining. Medication requires a form from the office, and families should update the school when a child’s medical needs change. Those procedures give parents concrete ways to keep staff informed.
Across the school, staff training includes attachment and trauma, while emotion coaching involves discussing feelings and working through difficult situations with children. The attachment approach includes allocating a trusted adult to children whose attachment difficulties affect school life. This is targeted support rather than a description of the nursery’s key-person arrangement.
Service families have additional school-level support. Reading Force connects children with a serving parent through remote bedtime reading during deployment. Support staff have ELSA training, and Nurture UK practitioners also advise parents and carers. These approaches address family separation as well as children’s emotions, linking support at school with life at home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions; attending nursery should never be taken as confirmation of a later school place.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01753 852894 or officeadmin@alexanderfirst.co.uk. The office opens on weekdays during term time from 08:30 to 15:30; these are office hours. During school holidays, emails are processed while the office reception is closed. The school uses Arbor for payments, with login details obtained through the office.
