Sounds, rhymes and confident conversation give Overstone’s nursery its character. Children begin building the habits that make shared learning possible: listening to others, taking turns and sharing. This is the school’s own nursery provision in Wing, with a Pre-School Manager and an EYFS Lead within the wider staff team.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 8 and 9 July 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific findings give parents a concrete picture of children developing their ideas and becoming confident enough to explain them.
Early learning here gives language a practical purpose. Conversation stood out at the July 2025 inspection: staff helped nursery children talk through the reasons for their choices and weigh up other people's opinions. Inspectors also found a secure start to learning, with children enthusiastic about trying out ideas and showing their work. For a parent, the useful detail is the emphasis on children expressing their thinking, alongside listening to someone else’s.
Sounds and rhymes introduce the earliest routines for phonics, the work that prepares children to connect sounds with reading. These nursery activities give children a starting point for later learning. Social development runs alongside them: established habits of sharing and turn-taking help children participate in a group.
Outdoor clothing is part of the pre-school uniform requirements, with wellingtons and waterproofs listed for the colder part of the year. Across the school site, physical facilities include a large field, a hall and Forest School. These are school facilities, rather than a description of a dedicated nursery garden.
A Pre-School Manager sits within a staff structure that also includes an EYFS Lead and an Inclusion Manager. Parents have a clear route for raising concerns: begin with the child’s teacher, using the office to request a callback or send an email. Unresolved early years concerns can then go to the EYFS Lead. This gives families a sequence for discussing learning, friendships or wellbeing.
For questions about special educational needs and disabilities, the school’s SENDCO can be contacted through the office email. The school’s September 2024 accessibility plan describes learning and play areas at ground level, a wheelchair lift at the main entrance and an accessible toilet in the KS1 block. Families with mobility needs have concrete features to consider when assessing the site.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
For the September 2024 intake, the admission arrangements used the local authority’s coordinated process. That cycle’s oversubscription rules included residence, siblings and exceptional medical or social circumstances, followed by distance; nursery attendance was not among those criteria.
Pre-school gates open at 8:30. This is a gate-opening time, rather than a nursery session booking pattern.
The pre-school winter uniform applies from October half term until Easter: navy jogging bottoms, a navy polo shirt and a navy jumper or cardigan, with comfortable footwear and outdoor waterproofs and wellingtons. Grey tailored shorts or a blue gingham dress are optional during the summer term and the first half of autumn.
Visits can be arranged through the school office on 01296 688799 or by emailing admin@overstone-wing.org. Booking a visit gives families a direct way to consider the provision before applying.
